Police shooting a reporter while her back is turned Cops are great

I’m not mad. Don’t put in the paper that I got mad

“Arrest me. Then come on my podcast. We can slot you in after Stephen Miller.”

Yup.

We caught hundreds of these on video in 2020. It was so egregious that even Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain was appalled

it is absolutely unimaginable, doglike servility that anyone is defending the democratic party's response to the second trump administration

schumer, who believes his entire job as minority leader is to represent israel to the left, responded to the black-bagging of a protester by condeming him for two paragraphs and demanding that he be charged with a crime

When Joe Biden did stuff like this, Fox would play the clips over and over like it was as significant as the moon landing

we’re all looking for the guy who did this

This was when I knew I could skip that one, btw.

“firing back”? on behalf of the shopping cart?

“A 2010 study that analyzed 40 years of protest coverage in five major newspapers, including The New York Times and The Washington Post, found that the papers depicted protests — even peaceful ones — as nuisances rather than as necessary functions of democracy.”

Feel pretty good about canceling my subscription

Heartbroken young friend sent me the below this morning. Blotted out names are congressional Democratic campaigns speaker has worked on. Tell yourself this is just one person w/ head in the sand. I teach in a college. There's a small amount of radicalism, then this, & then whole lotta disinterest.

Yep. Very, very hard not to be caught on some camera in a way that can lead to an arrest, even in full black bloc outfit.

The legal risk of violent protest has gone up in ways the public doesn't widely appreciate. I recently was a prosecutor in the Philly DA's office. I spent a lot of time reviewing pole camera video, footage from police street surveillance cameras. THOSE CAMERAS ARE POWERFUL. THERE ARE MANY OF THEM.

This was Biden's big failure. We did our part, the voters, we gave the Dems four full years to close the door on autocracy, they naively thought they could do it by demonstrating how nice it was to have a democracy. Imagine FDR with a similar response to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Seeing a massive divide online between Angelenos of all political stripes who understand that the protests in LA yesterday were mostly peaceful and any violence was ICE-initiated and East Coast establishment liberals lecturing “the left” on how riots just amplify right wing talking points.

For everyone saying these National Guardsmen won’t shoot their friends and neighbors—do you think some Texans might jump at the chance to crack Californian skulls?

Case in point, there's a corner on here that thinks Marines are ready to roll up from Pendleton since Pete said so, meanwhile mil folks are cracking jokes about this harshing their weekly blackout drinking night and whether the NG will get anyone to answer their phones to show up by Monday, maybe

i'm not necessarily a traditionalist on the issue of penance but i don't want to hear another fucking word from corey robin or samuel moyn until they have whipped every inch of fucking skin off their own backs

Not everyone has the option of impotently whining in the pages of The Atlantic about it, Tom

This is patently unlawful, if the Marines are being used for regular civilian law enforcement on the whim of the SecDef.

Maybe you could invite Stephen Miller on your podcast to talk about it

I've been thinking about this C.S. Lewis quote for the last few days as we head into some dark times.

TODDLER: fuck you! ME: what? T: fuck you!!! ME: [unable to believe my ears] what did you say T: FUCK YOU!!!!!!! WIFE: [from the other room] kiddo, are you saying “vacuum”? T: yeh

"I don't think the French left should use coercive means against their right-wing opposition," says Jacobin

Anyone able to confirm this? I have a hard time believing LAPD and LASD wouldn’t work hand-in-glove with the feds

Speaking from Portland’s 2020 experience, this is going to get very ugly, very fast. Angelenos have a lot more skin in the game than Portlanders did—and this Trump administration is a lot more depraved than the last one. That’s a potentially explosive combination.

If they did any of that, they wouldn’t be Democrats

Good.

Soundtrack for this weekend

For anyone showing up to the protests around LA this weekend, please bring supplies. Paper towels, milk, water, snacks, and any extra masks. Wear protective gear like helmets, goggles, full face protection, and heat resistant gloves. The tear gas canisters are hot and will burn

It's a weird thing, but the world in which Mitt Romney won in 2012 might be a better world

One of my more reactionary takes is that “leave your ethnic conflicts in the old country” is a norm that America should socially enforce

might have been a bad idea for D cities to send astronomical funds and weaponry to a violent armed gang that hates them.
