Professor of Atmospheric and Climate Science at the University of Washington. I study the natural and perturbed chemistry and composition of the atmosphere and how it interacts with weather and climate. But, I like other things too. Opinions my own, etc.

📅RSVP and mark your calendar! The 2025 Graduate Students' Distinguished Visiting Lecture is happening on May 14! This year's speaker, Prof. Elizabeth Barnes from CSU, will be speaking about the development and application of AI tools for Earth system prediction. RSVP: forms.gle/K2gsVP6ugMpw...

The port of Seattle right now. It's completely empty with no new ships coming in. We're going to have disruptions to access of basic goods unlike anything we have ever experienced in our lifetimes.

A full-time researcher position is available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, to advance the PTR-ToF-MS technique for detecting atmospheric peroxy radicals: www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...

Working out my smuggling runs - I've taken some sailing lessons, should be fine

wondering what will become of mcmaster.com this summer with 140% tariffs.

As an anecdote - I drove by the Port of Seattle on Friday and I thought - something's odd about that view - turns out it was how few containers there were awaiting transport. One could argue there's some science that could be done with this impact on shipping, but #science funding these days...

Join our group as part of the Encode: AI for Science Fellowship. We're looking for technically proficient AI experts to advance our research through a 12-month collaboration. This work will focus on a key uncertainty in climate change: clouds... Deadline: 30 April encode.pillar.vc/apply

I've decided that do not like Zotero - any other options people like (besides Endnote)?

hopefully true

I am ... amazed? For those of you not familiar with Pike Place, it is a wonderful pedestrian market that cars can, until tomorrow, freely drive through at any time (yes, it has made no sense).

Without me having said a word, a fine gentleman in the cafe this morning told me I could be arrested for impersonating a lawyer. It was the most damning critique of the law profession I've heard in a while.

The wholesale dismantling of the scientific research enterprise in the US is an unmitigated tragedy, but is sometimes represented as an opportunity for other countries. Thanks to Lewis Kay for expressing an important consideration in the midst of all the chaos www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Graduate student Ursula Jongebloed’s paper, published in Geophysical Research Letters, is ranked within the top 10% of the journal’s most-viewed papers in 2023! #TopViewedArticle agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Most rail services in the US still use polluting diesel locomotives. Recently, our commuter rail system in San Francisco, @caltrain.com, was electrified. Good news: we found DRAMATIC air quality improvements once the electric trains replaced the diesels. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

NEW: The Trump administration proposes nearly $1.7 billion in cuts to NOAA that, if passed, could decimate weather and climate research, including funding to nine California institutions. The @sfchronicle.com has obtained a White House document detailing the proposed budget cuts. Read it here:

Some good news. Air pollution is a leading cause of illness, death, and poor quality of life, plus bikes and parks are awesome. wapo.st/42LaIRA

The Atmospheric Chemistry GRC program is now posted (same link as below). Please consider applying to join the meeting to hear all these great talks and share your own work!

I'm going to guess that all the people on Twitter who claim to want more chemical manufacturing in the United States probably do not live in the Kanawha Valley in West Virginia or outside of Baton Rouge in Louisiana.

Bigger cars not only take up more space, but they also require more energy, incur larger maintenance costs on city infrastructure, and pose a greater safety risk to pedestrians. This is why some cities, like Paris, have higher on-street parking rates for larger vehicles.

He could feel sweat dripping down is back. He had managed this several times before. But this time was different. The dogs had been retrained. They knew the smells of ceramics and teflon coated wires now. He thought of what his buyers would do if the Swiss mass spectrometer hidden in his luggage...

🚨Reminder: Due at the end of this month! Please apply and forward to graduating PhD students and early-career postdocs. We expect to give partial funding support for all accepted participants, and they are automatically enrolled in the Atmospheric Chemistry GRC, thanks!

This year's atmospheric chemistry GRC will be preceded by the first-ever atmospheric chemistry GRS for early-career scientists! I hope you (or your early career colleagues) will consider joining us in Maine this summer. Policies and application instructions here: www.grc.org/atmospheric-...

It has been 20+ years, but my "time to review a 15 page proposal" perception still has to momentarily adjust to the fact that it is actually 150+ pages long.

@NASA and @caltech.edu kineticist extraordinaire Stan Sander died Saturday night surrounded by his family. Stan was a kind mentor, inventive scientist and engineer. He will be sorely missed by me and many colleagues around the world.
