Like, I actually saw through some of the euphemisms so clearly that I didn’t even register that something was even being talked around until years later. Like, child me learned about “manifest destiny” and my kid brain was immediately like “so that’s how they justified all the genocide”

Looking back my history books actually WERE censored but unfortunately for “the man” I actually enjoyed reading a lot so I was familiar with the concept of an unreliable narrator from a young age and saw through most of the euphemistic language almost immediately. This is why English is important.

There actually IS evidence of this for stuff like autism. A simple surface level look into the superstitions around changelings makes this incredibly obvious if you know even a little bit about mental health, which makes the supposed methods to get your “real” child back all the more horrific.
