The autistic urge to be a subject matter expert in every special interest and hide your power level in a regular small talk exchange 😮‍💨😆

If there’s one thing from the past I wish was still common, it’s rich people finding lil weirdos to patron I would be so good at being like, a professional hermit or odd artist or intellectual rambler, just Intriguingly Autistic for a living…instead I gotta be functioning executively all the time

Charlie Hart Speaker Showreel Need an autistic speaker for Autism Acceptance Month? Need a neurodivergent (AuDHD) speaker for Neurodiversity Celebration Week? Need a speaker with hidden disabilities for Disabled Pride Month? Check out my short showreel. #Neurodiversity #Autistic #AuDHD #Inclusion

Many Autistic ppl believe that monasteries are full of Autistic ppl. The evidence is ever compounding.

Me: I was diagnosed as autistic at 50 but I don't think I have any sensory processing issues Also Me: This sock feels funny on the corner of one toenail. I hate it with the fury of 1000 suns and must remove it immediately.

autistic burnout after christmas hits so hard

Trying to mask at holiday events feels like performing in a Broadway show I didn’t audition for… and somehow I’m also the stage manager. 🎭🫠 Also, I'm late diagnosed so I've had a lifetime of practice to get this right. You will never forget this show. 🙃 #NeurodivergentStruggles #AutisticLife

The autistic experience is always thinking you might be doing something wrong but telling yourself you're imagining it only to find out you are in fact doing something wrong and then still feel surprised by it.

Black autistic individuals are largely left out of media representation. I hope Autistic and Black is among the first of many pieces of literature to include our stories from around the world. Below are the demographics of those featured in the book🎉:

Sometimes autistic me ends up accidentally staring at people because I can't keep my eyes looking in just one place. People will then think I'm a creep. Hey.. my eyes ain't even focused isn't that clear?? How am I meant to do this??

U ever talk in a casual c9nversarion aboit things that seem like common knowledge but then realize you're way too online and way too autistic and u have to explain in detail all the seemingly little things hc the other person has NO context

the autistic feel of feeling like a child and an adult at the same time mentally. idk how to properly express the feeling, i hope it makes sense :c

Good thread, want to highlight the bit on special interests driving friendship. A lot of the really successful autistic friendships I see are driven by a shared love of a special interest. My favorite places to see autistics in the wild being autistically social is anime and gaming conventions.

Why is it so hard to make friends in adulthood, and what can we do about it? This is one of the most common issues I address in therapy. Struggles with making friends are particularly prominent for my autistic clients, but can affect anybody. Here's my best advice on making friends: 🧵

And this is the part where I misunderstand a vibe and get dropped by another friend group #autistic

AUTISM SPEAKS CANADA IS SHUTTING DOWN!!! This is a huge win!!!!!!! Source: their website

#autistic and #audhd folks can be the ideal person to lead during a crisis. Sometimes slow processing means that in the moment, we’re calm, cool, and collected!

An #ActuallyAutistic & #ADHD 🧵, re: Late-Adult Diagnosis: The cruel reality of being a late diagnosed neurodivergent person means you come to an understanding, no one you ever loved, ever even knew you. They only knew & loved your masking behavior. Masking (aka as camouflaging) is trauma coping.

I'm not the "into trains autistic" I am however the "hyperfixations change like a roulette wheel autistic"

ABA is not a "treatment" for autism. It is conversion therapy that teaches us how to ignore our own internal cues to appear less autistic in public. The vast majority of autistic adults advocate against it & studies show ABA leads to higher rates of suicidality & autistic burnout later in life.

Something I learned since discovering I’m #actuallyautistic is that often talking to neurotypical is like speaking a different language. We all focus on different details, and autistic people are pretty great at making connections that might not “make sense” to others.

It's so bizarre to me that allistic people describe autistic literalism as "black and white thinking," when autistics are the most nuanced people I know on this planet.

I love your account!! 💗

We need more support and resources for autistic adults. What do people think happens to autistic children? They just up and *poof* once they turn 18 or something? #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #autism

artsy queer AuDHD political / philosophical muser 🙋🏽 hoarder of books. talks a lot about trauma.... where are my people !!!

hello autistics were you a Titanic kid, a Dinosaur kid, a Natural Disaster kid or an Ancient Egypt kid

An autistic experience I hate: feeling like I missed subtext, based on observing some upset from my allistic counterpart in the interaction, but also knowing that asking for clarification when this happens is a faux pas… 1/2

If autistic people aren't considerate of other people how come I always tell the woman who takes my ticket that I hope she enjoys the movie too

sometimes i question if I'm really autistic and then i walk into a crowded bar two ciders deep with more randoms and friends than i expected and can hardly process the fact that i exist and I'm like oh.

This week, a student came to me with The Preamble™️. "So, I have a question, but understand if it's too personal..." "I'm an open book, kid." "Well, you've talked about being autistic and..." *Smiles knowingly, thinks 'They finally figured it out.'* "So, I got a message from my therapist... 1/

Twilight is a lot more palatable if you consider that Bella and Edward are both autistic

What fabrics can’t you wear my fellow ADHD, AuDHD, Autistic, folk? Denim makes me panic, angry, uncomfortable and distracted. I’ve tried, but every time it makes me want the world to end. #adhd #audhd #autism

"But I don't need to know how your brain works". A common comment, when autistic people talk about the need to explain that we're autistic. Mmm. Let's explain a bit of everyday life. Thread. I am invited into a meeting with e.g. 7 people whose brains function in 'typical' ways/

Typical autistic interaction Them: Wow you really know a lot about [niche topic] My brain: Yeah five years ago someone made an offhand comment that triggered a weeks-long fixation where i learned everything available about it. My mouth: Yeah, idk, just have a lot of interests i guess

That autistic experience where your lack of social intuition makes you unable to tell if the question is rhetorical, or if the person would actually like an answer.

Any #autisticdoctors or #autisticnurses out there? What’s it like doing such a people-heavy role day in and out? I’d love to hear thoughts.

Like, all the ADHD and Autistic people, in unison: "Yup."
