I’ve been exhausted, but here’s a very late #WoodpeckerWednesday of a downy woodpecker from this past weekend #birds

Each spring, migratory birds travel thousands of miles—only to face deadly threats in our cities. Over 1B die in the U.S. yearly from window collisions. Dim lights at night. Treat glass by day. These simple steps save lives. Learn more: bit.ly/stopbirdcoll... #LightsOutForBirds

Good Monday morning! I’m up early for banding, but yesterday went out with my new lens and got some beautiful shots of a palm warbler. #birds

I got my new lens today, and despite it being dreary and close to sunset, I took it out for a bit. I’m not used to a silent auto-focus, and having the zoom internally is really nice. Despite my ISO being way too high, this series of a white-throated sparrow eating a dandelion came out pretty good!

Met a little tufted titmouse with a lot of attitude today. I adore these little guys so much ❤️ #birds

Today was one of those days where my photos didn’t turn out that great. But I did get some slightly better parula photos, captured a house wren, found the first orchard oriole of the season, and got some stinking adorable tufted titmouse pics, so not a total waste

Happy Friday! Yesterday I found a pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers hard at work building their nest. They make cup nests out of grass, weeds, plant fibers, and strips of bark, line it with plant down, feathers, and animal hair, and decorate with lichen and spider webs. Good luck little guys! #birds

I did some birding this evening and came acros others doing the same. But one couple really annoyed me. The man had a camera with a telephoto lens, as expected. His wife had binoculars, but was holding her phone up, playing repeated bird calls. This is not only unethical bird photography (1/2)

Added some kitten kibble Ozma never ate to our crow buffet and it seems to be a hit! Watched one of them eat up a bunch before grabbing two large scrambled egg chunks and flying off ❤️

Happy Wednesday! Yesterday I went out thinking it would be cool to see the American Bittern that was reported nearby. I didn’t expect to ACTUALLY find it! A new lifer for me! #birds

Am I exhausted from getting up at 4:45 yesterday, going to banding where we caught 61 birds and I walked 5 miles in total? Heck yes. Am I still going out birding today? Probably also yes

I’ve been trying new settings and such on my camera to see if it increases the amount of keepers I get. I was surprised yesterday that most of my yellow-throated warbler photos came out despite a grey sky background, and today this yellow-bellied sapsucker came out pretty good despite high-ISO

Also, the spring banding blitz starts this weekend. I’ll get photos when I can, but I will definitely report on what variety of birds we get! I’m excited to see some I haven’t seen yet!

Sorry I haven’t been posting much lately; we’ve had a lot of crappy weather and life has just been getting in the way. I did get out yesterday and got some pics of this beautiful yellow-rumped (myrtle) warbler, though! #birds #warblerwednesday

I was on a path scanning the woods with my binoculars for the barred owls, when suddenly one hooted from the tree behind me, like “I’m over here, dummy”

Our crow friendship is going well! We had been seeing three consistently around the house, but lately it's been maybe two at a time, but often just one. I think that it's the pair from last year and their young one (Almond, Cashew, and Peanut). I believe Peanut has been helping while Cashew is (1/?)

I’m one year younger, but this, essentially

I did go out a couple days ago and surprisingly found a young female pileated woodpecker flying about (with dad watching on from the nest hole). They nested early this year! #birds #woodpeckerwednesday

I want to go take pics but it’s been so windy and/or rainy lately 😩 it’s supposed to rain every day from now through Sunday…

Hate to be millennial about it all but it is just mental that my whole working life has just been a series of recessions and “economic shocks”, underpinned by stagnant wages

Had our first chipping sparrow of the season stop by the camera feeder ❤️

The crows were going nuts outside so I figured a predator was in the area. Grabbed my cam and found them yelling at coop (who I haven’t seen in a bit). Seems to be missing some tail feathers - starting to molt into adult plumage! #birds #raptors #coopershawk

The FF9 love this patch is ❤️

Asian market nearby carries quail eggs, but the more economical option (18 for $3.99) was all sold out. Ended up getting regular chicken eggs, since the more expensive quail eggs were twice the price. I hope these crows appreciate it, lol

In bird things: Peanut (the baby of our crow fam) landed on our fence and started to caw for treats at 9:30, so I scrambled the remaining eggs. Once again the whole family (3 of them) came to eat. I’m out of eggs and didn’t get more yet so I hope they’ll forgive me for only giving them peanuts tmrw

Birding might be spotty until I catch up on some things in FFXIV. I still need to do last patch’s MSQ, and spent most of the day crafting gear. Did M5-M7 though, and man they’re fun but tough

Picked up a grocery order and came home, got out of the car and heard a “red-shouldered hawk” (blue jay) right above me. Turns out he was trying to scare the crows away from the peanuts we put out 😂 What an amusing corvidae (corvid day)! Haha! (Sorry not sorry)

My small murder has come back in the last few weeks to hang out near our house, so today, instead of the usual peanuts, I scrambled some old eggs I had in the fridge (still smelled ok) and left them out. Seems like they were a hit! 🐦‍⬛

Checked the camera I have pointed towards the mourning dove nest to find it's empty. It's only been six days, so my guess is a predator got to it. The leaf scoop was shifted slightly as well, so that's probably likely. We do have a murder of crows that live in a nearby pine that might have done it

Here's a heavy crop to show just how impressive a Great Horned Owl's claws are! #wildlife #owls #birds

I couldn’t get good pictures due to the lighting and distance, but I got to witness this female American kestrel hovering in place over a field before diving while hunting a few times yesterday. Beautiful to behold #birds #raptors
