I wanted to show support for these brave public servants and to allow others, including the scientific community, to join me. In partnership with @standupforscience.bsky.social‬, we have a way for you to do that... www.standupforscience.net/bethesda-dec...

Even with excellent doctors advocating for me and being an excellent advocate for myself, GA's abortion laws made it hard for me to get lifesaving miscarriage management last fall (I've spoken a lot about this); we need MORE laws protecting our health and access to healthcare, certainly not FEWER.

It is not the job of universities to cater to the random whims of any given president. We serve our institutional missions, and for public universities that includes serving the public good. The president is not a king and we are not his subjects, Linda.

This was a great talk on so many levels! Delightful. As a non-phylogenetics person I could totally follow the main points and even some of the math, and am well convinced we need to be taking tip fog into account. #Evol2025

And *I* will likely be able to get the shot if any pregnant person can (if/when I have another pregnancy). But I have a lot of knowledge, resources, and willingness and ability to fight for healthcare. Many/most don’t. The COVID stillbirths are terrible. We should protect everyone we can.

For more about how existing GA laws made my late miscarriage so much worse, see coverage of an event I spoke at (many many thanks to @ossoff.senate.gov for organizing) www.wabe.org/maternal-nea...

Starting off with the phylogenetics methods section because I am a geneticist masquerading as an evolutionary biologist so I'm hoping the (intro portions probably) of the talks help me get my tree thinking in better shape #Evol2025

Oh if I can I will. But they are talking about yanking approval for it for my groups and many people rely on these recommendations (especially who don’t have as much experience with healthcare and health issues etc)

The idea that you can simply be a scientist (not a doctor, not an engineer, but a scientist) and make a living is completely foreign to most of the world. It's what made US such an attractive place to come for anyone interested in science. And given technological prosperity, US has reaped rewards

But there's a catch - if you normalize these data to the total number of R01s and F31s awarded in 2023, the story changes: a greater *percentage* of the trainee awards have been cancelled as compared to non-trainee awards.

I understand, but I think this is a discriminatory practice. You can't invite minority trainees to one opportunity, then prematurely close that opportunity, then use that as an excuse to pull funding specifically from minority trainees. If trainees knew this could happen, they wouldn't have applied.
