NEW: Two planes crash on the runway at Scottsdale Airport. At least one person has died after an aircraft crash on the runway Monday at the Scottsdale Airport. Three other people onboard the plane have been taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries. 🔗 www.abc15.com/news/region-...

Hearing that DOGE went into the Dept of Education today and shut down almost the entirety of the department's in-house research arm, Institute of Educational Sciences, cancelling contracts totally about $900m.

Interesting take. Investment vs. predation.

AI applied properly?

An interesting viewpoint that I really think my followers should investigate. 😉

About to find out if we still live in a somewhat functioning democracy or if the Trump admin will decide to ignore courts and become a dictatorship. As I wrote this, figured some would think this hyperbole. But if they ignore the other branches of government?

Rage-bait accounts are good at distracting, misleading and exhausting us, not directing us toward effective action. Stay vigilant in who you let into your feed and headspace right now…

Some commenting about NIH research support don't appreciate how incredibly competitive it is to get these funds. A typical study section reviews ~70-100 grants, most of which are outstanding but only ~10 end up getting funded. Can't think of any process in the private sector that is as competitive

I want to send this post to way too many people in academia. I think of this as inviting a vampire into your house willingly.

Occam's razor posts made by this user may be a form of self-flagging. Hypothetically. Or not?. Hypothetically. If imagined as a 6-year-old with a college level understanding of quantum physics. 🙂

Proud my Alma Mater taking point

NEW: More than 300 career employees at the EPA have left. Those who remain face a painful decision: resign or work for an administration that plans to radically reshape the EPA while reversing environmental protections. By @fastlerner.bsky.social & @pratheekrebala.bsky.social

This fact sheet on the White House website lists bullet point items of what it alleges are “waste and abuse” at USAID. I was curious what they came up with. Actually every link is to articles at Daily Mail, Breitbart and Washington examiner. www.whitehouse.gov/uncategorize...

Happy "Microsoft trying to force CoPilot subs" day in the UK for all who celebrate. (They just pinged me my renewal notice with it carefully worded to sound like a compulsory general price increase). 1) Go to your account page 2) Hit cancel 3) Change sub back.

Impressive work from Liqiang Huang: www.nature.com/articles/s41... I'd like to see how this generalizes beyond 4-item color memory (e.g., different set sizes, retention intervals, memoranda, cueing, etc.). I'd also like to see comparison with earlier models. This model has "only" 57 parameters!

1. We cannot now rule out the possibility of systemic collapse in the United States. If Trump and Musk paralyse the federal government, this could trigger social, financial and industrial failures. Neither Trump nor his team know how to respond to such failures, which could snowball and converge. 🧵

This is possibly the most astonishing thing I've read from the last week. DOGE re-writing air traffic control. DOGE gutting USAID & raiding its SCIF. DOGE hoovering up OPM. All of it madness. But this one is worse. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...
