It's sad and infuriating that this baby is born into a life of captivity for humans to gawk at. What's worse is that people are perfectly happy to pay for this to happen.
Zoos do amazing things for conservation, this little baby will have a fully belly and medical care all its life, there are plenty of worse fates for these amazing creatures.
That's a side-project they do so that people can kid themselves when they pay to see captive animals. Legitimate conservation can be done without the show.
Who may i ask, is paying for this "legitimate" conservation? Do most people know what animals are endangered animals? Do most people know why many of these animals dont make good pets? Zoos to a lot to make people aware of the problems as well as fund programs to help the animals
I'm not convinced by the "it makes money to fund good things" argument, but I do follow the logic. In many cases, like with zoos, I don't think they're actually making an effort to actually do the good things without exploiting animals.
I feel like you need to learn more about zoos then, their animal ambassadors do a lot of good. They have entire programs for teaching animals to participate in their own medical care to reduce stress. There are entire species we wouldn't have anymore without zoos (like the cali condor)
While thats all well and good (and i dont disagree) but we cant even get them to pay taxes for eliminating hunger and homelessness in fellow humans. We have a long way to go to get them to care about the rest of the planet
I just found out Elephants get the menopause. I overheard it in a gift shop and haven’t wiki-verified it but why should that stop me posting it as fact?
Hey that’s my zoo! But why the weird sounding update “very baby”? Cmon man, don’t make us Oregonians sound any weirder than we are k? Anyways very adorbs baby!
I love them, but the Elephant facilities at the Oregon Zoo are too small and antiquated for an elephant herd. I wish you’d let them go to a sanctuary where they can roam, and concentrate on the wonderful animals who don’t require such huge amounts of space to be happy.
Petition to have them sent to http://pawsweb.org/
Toronto's city council voted to have the Toronto Zoo's elephants sent there in 2011, and now they get to be "retired" on 2000 acres of land!
Elephant calves are such divas. This little shit came charging at our safari jeep with his ears and trunk flapping trying to show us what a badass he was. Then when he realized his mom wasn't right behind him, he panicked and ran back to hide under her belly. 😂
wow. doing the bare minimum on those alt texts, aren't you? might as well have written, "gray shape with face noodle," it would have been as descriptive.
@oregonzoo.bsky.social breeds wild animals for tickets & memberships they can sell. Disgusting. Stop forced breeding of wild animals. Use sanctuaries, end trophy hunting & fight the causes of poaching & habitat destruction.
Zoos are for exploitation & making money. Evil. @humanesociety.bsky.social
Experience keeping dogs, cats, birds, Guinea pigs, hamsters, macaw, iguana, possums, and chickens that i can remember, so I would be qualified to foster rose2
I'm periodically reminded that elephants need over a year to learn to use their trunks correctly, so for a while the calves are just swinging them like dingalings, and I die.
But; to bring things back to politics: the profound thing one needs to understand about Trump, is that he feels absolutely nothing when he sees this elephant and her calf.
.. its a brilliant idea .. wear a red hat, talk shit, get elected in Trumperville Alabammer then after election dye your hair rainbow and vote DEI all the way

Sheldrick is an amazing organization! (the way they do things is by far the best solution i have ever seen and the rewilding rate is astounding)
Sadly they can not save all endangered animals alone, still many zoos also have rewilding programs as well, look at the california condor for its success
Wait so you are FOR species extinction and habitat destruction as a whole? Because some of them might experience some stress in the process of protecting the entire species and planet??
We can't gestate long enough to allow the fetal development to become functional at birth like other mammals. It's an evolutionary limitation. And probably a good thing, too, considering what happens when a toddler has too much access and power.

shame on you @oregonzoo.bsky.social @humanesociety.bsky.social #captivitykills
-Safari hunts in the name of “conservation”.
I get what you’re saying, but the wild isn’t exactly safe for these beauties.

I agree that zoos suck.
But I also think humans suck too.
I remember Rose-Tu being born and going to visit, gods, 30 years ago?? And now she's the mom of this gorgeous little tyke?
I WANNA VISIT!
I owe you, like, a whole bowl of Captain Crunch!
"Yes, sweetheart, that's how you do it."
it was a lot more enjoyable than most of the other things I did during internships
I was ready to get my kid out at 39 weeks

Am I the only person who is disgusted by this?
In captivity to entertain humans, nothing at all to do with conservation
This very much is a thing to celebrate.
The attention this little one gets makes people aware of their plight, it raises money to protect their habitat and more
These are creatures kept in zoos and breed in zoos
The cruelty is beyond measure
We will have to agree to disagree

Weird take honestly....
wow
Almost distracts from the ‘born in prison for committing no crime’.
