I’d vote for the no. 5 first if you are getting metal body planes. The extra weight of a no. 6 is noticeably more fatiguing when doing a lot of hand milling for me. If you are considering wooden bodied I’d say whichever one you can find a good deal on will work.

Thanks Matt!

Thanks! I used a scorp to roughly it out and refined the shape with a travisher (kinda like a chair seat specific spoke shave sort of tool).

With a decent set of hand tools and a little bench you can get a lot done in a small space! I replaced a lot of the furniture in my house with such a setup. Excited to see your workshop come together.

Love that walnut panel! A lovely rocker, beautiful work.

It’s a good time, I’d highly recommend.

It makes me really appreciate even a small workshop space!

I briefly worked off my kitchen counter but mostly in small apartment garages the last few years. Not sure if I’ll ever have a bespoke workshop, but maybe!

I got this set a number if years ago when I started woodworking and it is fantastic! I still go back to reference them from time to time.

Came out fantastic!

Can confirm they are pretty great to have. I made a super simple one with a cheap tail vise screw and just a wedge on the floor for width adjustment. Not the prettiest but retrofits to most benches pretty easy and gets the job done.

The results are fantastic! I think it would be very pretty on a chair for sure.

Yeah! Just got the first coat of finish on it today so will take/share some more pictures once it’s all done later this week.

Looking awesome! Love the long sticks going from narrow below the arm to above flare above.

What finish did you use on this? Love how deep the black is but how well it still shows the grain.

Thanks! I’ve only ever used a scorp because it’s all I’ve got. I can see how an adze for roughing out the center of the seat and a scorp for around the edges would be really nice though.

A serious upgrade!

Starting your day off right!

I’ve never seen smoked oak before, it’s very pretty! Do you know if it’s smoked white oak?

Glad you are on the mend and hope you are fully recovered soon. Hopefully your phone recognizes you as I’ve soon too Obviously for very different reasons, but I understand the frustration, when I do a lot of sanding my fingerprint sensor doesn’t recognize me for a few days after and it’s annoying.

Thank you! I’m excited with how it’s coming along.

This looks like my water bottle last night when I left it on the workbench while carving a chair seat. I may have tried drinking some shavings accidentally.

I donno about marketing strategy but I’d say a good strategy to be awesome (although I may just be old and out of touch with what’s cool).

It good to have a good branch collection!

I love the combo of oak and walnut.

Honesty very impressive. I just took a bunch of green pin oak that is filling up half my garage now and I haven’t even finished processing the white oak log sitting on my front porch 😬

Would be stoked to read about your process for the chair if you do write something up! This chair is so cool!!
comment in response to post
It does feel like a completely different thing sometimes. It took a while to wrap my head around it all, but now that I have I can’t stop making more chairs!
comment in response to post
It will make a fantastic tapestry for sure!

And the smell of this green oak is great. A full sensory experience making shavings.

I’ve ripped my hand up pretty good in making the tenons in the past for sure.

I love these colors! Such a lovely palette all together.

The hands of a woodworker! Can’t remember the last time I didn’t have at least a little cut or blister on my hands.
comment in response to post
That walnut looks dreamy! Love how rich the color is.

Those look better than my early dovetails, so I’d say looking awesome!

I deleted my instagram a few weeks ago, a little fomo for sure but generally don’t miss it much (although definitely quite a bit more engagement for woodworking stuff there). Hopefully with time the community will get bigger over here!

As usual a wonderful discussion! I appreciate the diverse set of guest you have been having on the podcast, fun to hear so many different perspectives.

Fantastic, thanks. I was shaping slats last night and trying to figure out how to hold them well. I guess I’ve got my answer!
comment in response to post
What is that jig in the high vise for holding?
comment in response to post
Some good chairs to appreciate too!

Thanks for the suggestion, a little intimidating thinking of sending pics of my work to him.
