A little moment of joy - we have the first true spring week in Bloomington, and the cats are overjoyed that deck time is back

It's not for everyone but this song is a journey that is worth every second open.spotify.com/track/2Gt7fj...

One of my favorite things about faculty writing group (other than it helping me get articles out quicker) is that after every session we all put a silly sticker on our name cards as a reward. A bit of whimsy that reminds you at the end of the semester how much you showed up & how hard you worked 😄

I don't know what it says about me that my measure of a good book is whether I have to clean the tear spots off my glasses when it's over. But I just finished Onyx Storm and my glasses were spottyyyy 😭

Colleagues, I’m about to make an ask that used to work better on Twitter, but if you could help me out that would be so amazing. I’m considering the timing of my tenure process and looking to make my strongest case. If you’ve used my work in class, could you please email or dm me to let me know?

Every day (every hour?) brings fresh horrors so tonight I did what I always do when life feels scary and overwhelming - cuddled under a blanket and watched an animated movie that makes the world feel beautiful for a little while. Highly recommend The Wild Robot for anyone who needs a soothing cry

Jim Acosta announces on air that he's leaving CNN and says, "it is never a good time to bow down to a tyrant ... don't give in to the lies."

Thinking about this a lot tonight. However you feel about tiktok as a form of social media, it's a haunting reminder that Congress is perfectly capable of working together across the aisle, but chooses to do so not to help the public, but to control online speech and line billionaires' pockets.

Websites that log you out without telling you that you've been logged out (and without saving your progress) are the pinnacle of terrible design. The number of times I've hit "submit review" for a journal only to be told I've been logged out and all my progress is reset 🤬

I don't know how many of y'all are watching the migration of American TikTokers to RedNote, but it's the most fascinating thing I've EVER SEEN HAPPEN ONLINE. 🧵

I hope the people who string their balconies in twinkle lights or have purple/blue lights glowing from their windows know that I look at their lights fondly as I drive by and thank them for the moment of beauty they've shared with me

"We have set up a system of interlocking ninth circles of hell for all of our basic needs. Housing is a noose of landlord interests, developer exploitation and rising costs. ... Our moral economy is trash." Whew, this is a great read.

The paper, The Unpaid Toll: Quantifying the Public Health impact of AI, “finds that the generation of electricity for data centers hosting artificial intelligence applications could pollute the air so much that by 2030 an additional 1,300 people may die prematurely each year as a result.”

Meeting someone else who has lost a parent at a younger age is such a comforting yet devastating experience, equal parts "I'm so relieved to find someone else who understands this feeling" mixed with "I am so deeply sad that you understand this feeling"

People of Bluesky! Quote a favorite film using gifs only. (Since it's hard to read: "Beautiful things don't ask for attention.")

SURJ has a mass call for white people happening tonight where they will help people process and also plug people into ongoing organizing work: www.mobilize.us/surj/event/7...

If you want to fight for immigrant rights I highly recommend Never Again Action, OCAD, Raíces, United We Dream, Immigrant Defense Project, Mijente, and Cosecha.

Kovu is anxiously watching election results from the safety of the laundry basket. Tempted to do the same tbh 🫣

SARAH MCBRIDE OF DELAWARE BECOMES THE FIRST TRANSGENDER MEMBER OF CONGRESS CAN I GET A HELL YEAH FROM THE STRESSED OUT CHAT

Voting Clinton 2016 // Voting Harris 2024

"Do Republicans and other fascists want healing? Is that what they're asking for? "Do Republicans and other fascists want to walk these redemptive paths? If so, why aren't they walking them? If not, why are we so certain those paths are closed and that we are the ones who have closed them?" 🔥

Excited to announce the publication of my postdoctoral work exploring youth perspectives on AI, where we ask students what they want from AI in their classrooms and what futures they imagine for AI in learning (both good and bad): www.mdpi.com/2227-7102/14...

Had a truly bizarre birthday today, started w/ lovely faculty writing group, was derailed around lunchtime by someone stealing my wallet at the public library, but ended up getting my wallet returned to me just before birthday dinner! I've had enough excitement for the week now, thanks 😵‍💫😮‍💨

Completing a title IX training and these things always make me uncomfortably aware that somewhere in the world there's a man who needed to be told "hey don't make your student take an exam the day after they gave birth to a literal human"

Just shopped at Torrid for the first time & when was anyone gonna tell me that I don't actually hate clothes shopping, I just hate the self-esteem crush of stores that design exclusively for small bodies?? Turns out designing for large bodies isn't actually difficult if you put in any effort lol

Maybe this is a hot take given the ~discourse~ I've seen re: #ISLS24 community day, but the site visit at a local Buffalo bike repair & community activism space (GOBike) was fantastic. I am so thankful to the conference organizers for helping us to engage meaningfully with these educational spaces

LGBTQ+ happy hour at ISLS is always such a nourishing and joyful space. So grateful to have so many cool and kind folks in this community 🥰

At what point does one decide: "this academic paper has taken too much of my time and energy and its time to toss it" vs. submitting yet another round of revisions? I feel like I'm a living embodiment of sunk cost fallacy as I attempt to respond to reviewer comments for the fourth? (fifth?) time now

Academic folks: if you see an assistant prof job ad that says: "willingness to travel and work during break time, weekends, and evening hours" as one of the desired qualifications, would you say that's a red flag? Asking for a friend (the friend is me)

Barbara is an amazing faculty member and a brilliant human. She teaches our Feminist methodologies course at IU and has been instrumental in helping so many of us learn what it means to work towards justice. She is the standard by which I evaluate what it means to live your beliefs. 💙

Day 3 and protests at IU are still going strong. Another violent round of arrests today and police tore through the camp, confiscating supplies. But our community is strong. Volunteers have been steadily replacing and organizing supplies this afternoon. Pic of my sign for today - all eyes on Gaza.

Just saw the video of cops tasing one of the kids at the Emory protest. He’s Black, on the ground w/ multiple cops restraining him and they tased him. We should be so much madder about all this. I am so angry we lied and told these kids education and college campuses would protect them.

Every single one of these prohibited activities happens all over the @UF campus on football game days, except instead of “protesting” they call it “tailgating”.
