Taking this as my sign from the universe to stop doom scrolling and go read some silly books 🫡

Bottom line, most apps push drama and anger, doom and gloom. This was the only app other than Tumblr that just...showed me things that brought joy. And it's infuriating to lose access to that kernel of joy just because the significantly worse US social media apps got jealous.

On tiktok I was able to feel less alone in my struggles with PCOS and mental & physical health. The algorithm was uniquely effective - instead of giving me doom scrolling garbage like most sites, it gave me connection, hope, and genuine belly laughs when I was having a bad day.

Folks love to dunk on tiktok and call it "brainrot", but the corners of tiktok I frequented were honestly beautiful, community oriented spaces. Sharing recipes, book recommendations, and the rapid dissemination and discussion of news and ideas. And yeah, lots of humor!

(brought to you by a discussion about life transitions in my faculty writing group this morning that got unexpectedly heavy with discussions of grief)

It's a club absolutely no one wants to be in, but finding another member gives me a moment where I can sit in the grief with someone else and acknowledge that yeah, this still sucks no matter how many years go by. And you see it, even if others can't.

Yesss!! If mine hadn't been Walter Mitty it would've been LOTR. So many great scenes 💙

This article also gives a sneak peek into ongoing work to develop a story-based learning environment focused on issues of food systems and food justice, and the ways we are integrating small-scale AI conversational agents to support open-ended student inquiry into complex socioscientific problems

I'm actually floored though is this what all my thin friends were experiencing this whole time, like what do you mean I can just walk into this store, grab a bunch of stuff labeled size 2, and 80% of it fits awesome??
And also every dress they sell has pockets!!

Like, we got to hear about a ton of awesome community work that they're doing to teach repair skills, bike safety, and to promote safer walkable and bikeable streets in Buffalo, AND we got a hands on tire patching lesson! It was a far richer learning experience than most conference sessions tbh

That is good to hear! It sometimes feels like everyone around me has much smoother review processes, but I know that's not actually true. There's still a part of me that wants this paper out in the world, so I think it makes sense to give this new journal one more try, at least

Part of the issue is we switched journals because after three rounds it was clearly never going to lead to publication. But now I'm back again with essentially the feedback that this paper should be rewritten to be a different paper. Again. It feels endless.

It sounds from the ad like the program relies heavily on online courses and they have lots of overseas students enrolled, so I *think* the expectation is you have to be available for office hours that work for other timezones? But specifically "be willing to work during breaks" felt odd to me
