Internationally, the Sega Saturn was trying to match the aesthetics of the incredibly successful Genesis. In Japan, the Saturn was trying NOT to look like the Mega Drive, which was a failure over there. (Even though JP Mega Drive is objectively the sexiest console ever but that's beside the point.)
