Trump has made this deal so that he gets his trip to Windsor Castle. (He wont be invited to Buckingham Palace because there would be too many protesters in London).

This was just brilliant. Thank you for sharing.

The practical effect will be that research into vaccines will move from the US to more ethical/enlightened countries.
All part of the MAGA war on science where the US will be the loser

I used to work with a major UK company that had Skadden Arps as its US counsel. The pressure from the in-house lawyers to drop them would be overwhelming.

I’d vote for (c) and think this is because Russia has blackmail material hanging over his head.

And to the ordinary person it’s not at all obvious that the government is doing badly.

Faraage literally owns the Reform Party - it’s a limited company and he owns over 50% of the shares. There’s no way he can be replaced as its leader.

By any normal standards the US market is hugely overvalued and it’s when not if there’s going to a dip.
Take Tesla. It accounts for about half the market cap of all motor manufacturers worldwide. Yes it had a lead but others are catching up.

Starmer is focused on the mess left by the previous government and the actions being taken to fix it.
Brexit is a big part of the mess.
But focusing on Brexit now would give the Tories the chance to refight the referendum and divert attention away from everything else.

Hi
Understood. And it’s completely understandable why Labour supporters don’t want to be involved in the Lords. But the Lords’ standing orders do impose limits on the party affiliations of elected hereditary peers - its #9 below.

Sorry for the delayed reply. There is a standing order of the House of Lords that specifies how the elected hereditary peers are to be distributed by party. It was adopted to reflect the distribution of the hereditary peers at the time of the last reform act.

Kind of think there was a clue but fought with money not weapons.
Very much hope violence can be avoided.

It’s all very reminiscent of Athens in 411 BCE. The oligarchs didn’t last long then.
But maybe those duped by MAGA have to experience pain to appreciate how they have been taken in.

A pernicious twist to the current system is that only 2/92 places are allocated to Labour peers while 40/92 are reserved for Tories (with the rest cross-benchers), adding insult to injury.
Reform is long overdue.

I’m on a prison monitoring board and spend much time in a prison.
The problems in prisons all stem from Ministers (with the notable exceptions of Rory Stewart and David Gauke) taking decisions exclusively on political, Daily Mail pleasing grounds.
Thank goodness we now have grown ups in charge.

Healthcare in America is as much to do with control as care. The combination of “at will” employment and employer provided healthcare gives employers huge power & in part explains why working conditions are so tough & so much of US national income accrues to business owners not workers

Isn’t the fundamental point single payer not for profit healthcare systems that cover everyone in a country are inherently more efficient than the American for profit insurance based system?
As well as creating better health outcomes.

Because being a Masterchef Professional finalist is life changing for the competitors and they should not have to suffer for Wallace’s appalling behaviour.

You do know you come across as a bit of a wimp. X has been bought and is being used by a billionaire to promote his interests. It’s time to change.

Isn’t Biden’s point that the rule of law had already been broken with the politically motivated pros/persecution of his son? In these circumstances what he’s done is right and proper.

In England we cut off the head of the last England who demanded absolute power; we then had a dalliance with a populist dictator; before reinstalling democratic government.
You will get through this America.
Your friends wish you well.

Life does mean life (albeit with part of a sentence being served on licence)
Lifers are not released early for good behaviour. They serve their minimum terms and are released only if they are judged no risk to the public.
Prisons are horrible, unpleasant places
comment in response to

There’s a compounding problem in that the Parole Board had become very risk averse. I volunteer in a prison and know lifers who prison offender managers and psychologists think would be safe to release who have been turned down for release on licence several times.

Er. The EU has a bigger population than the US and is a lot nearer than the US so it really is kind of obvious that the EU is a bigger market than the US.

An over 80 exclusion time limited for say 7 years would be sensible. I met a farmer who works the family farm that is owned by his 86 year old mother. It’s too late for them to exploit the 7 year gift exemption now but it seems unfair that he should be hit by an unforeseeable change in the law.

It’s deliberate. He wants a cabinet full of accused people to put up two fingers (or whatever the American idiom is) to those who have accused and convicted him.

UK.
A country with problems but one where the grown ups are back in power after three disastrous PMs: one a TV clown and populist, one reportedly suffering from a manic episode and one out of his depth and out of touch with normal people.
You will get your country back, sooner rather than later

Perhaps there’s no cure for the MAGA nonsense until it’s been tried and shown to fail, as fail it must.
But the cost to the young, the old, the vulnerable, the poor and the ill will be huge.
A British politician put it well. See below.

My parents married in 1942 and all they were allowed was a wedding “cake” made out of cardboard.
When they cut into the cardboard they found a small (illegal) cake.
Their neighbours up and down the street had kicked in coupons to make the cake
My mother teared up telling the story 60 years on.

I’m on an Independent Prison Monitoring Board and attend adjudications in front of an external judge from time to time. By and large the quality of the solicitors who represent prisoners is very poor. I presume this is because the remuneration doesn’t attract better lawyers.

I spoke with a farmer on the tube on his way back from the demonstration. He works the land but it’s owned by his 86 year old mother. Why on earth didn’t she make the farm over to him years ago?!
