NEW // The post-Galway United episode of The Drog Pod post-match audio briefing is here! @barrylandy.bsky.social offers up some almost instant reaction and analysis to tonight's 1-1 draw with the Tribesmen. www.loveisthedrog.ie/p/the-drog-p... (€)

A lot happening in that notebook - ideas big and small. Time to make some of them a reality. Join us in 2025 - loveisthedrog.ie

Hey Bluesky community, I'm on the lookout for new work opportunities in 2025. An experienced sports journalist with 12 years experience working in the industry, I have worked as a writer/reporter, researcher, social media coordinator and sub-editor for both print and online. All help appreciated!

I've only seen and read very fleeting bits from the Golden Globes. But every single time I happen upon Anthony Mackie, he comes across like a complete arsehole.

All of the Daniel Craig Bond movies have been on TV over Christmas, but all out of sequence. Is it really that hard to broadcast them in order so the viewer can follow a narrative?

Couldn’t stay up late enough to watch it at 2am last night, but renewing my acquaintance with Dog Day Afternoon now. An extraordinary, groundbreaking movie of its age. And, frankly, anything with John Cazale is must-watch.

I can only repeat that every journalist to whom someone responds something like, "I would read your story but it's paywalled," or related, should respond, "I want whatever job or service you provide for free. Seems fair, no?"

If you’re in Ireland you can even join online for free (librariesireland.spydus.ie/cgi-bin/spyd...) and then start getting ebooks, audiobooks and newspapers (through the Borrowbox app) and magazines (through Libby) for free!

Tell an artist/writer/podcaster/maker that what they’re doing matters to you. They want to hear it. Making shit is lonely work most of the time and it helps to know that the circuit is being completed somewhere.

The answer to this question, I have since discovered, is USC at Sports Direct. And they’re having a sale.

Late to this. Just finished watching season two of The Outlaws, the BBC crime-caper. Pitch-perfect and very, very funny.

Subscribed to The Guardian today. €9.99 monthly to get access to the app. They’ve changed their tune. All for the normalisation of paying for news. It’s not paywalled, it’s free on the web version. But the app is mightily convenient.

The greatest scene in Seinfeld history, in my opinion, is in ‘The Race’ when George walks into the coffee shop and pretends to recognise Jerry in front of Duncan Meyer. Jason Alexander is glorious. He was nominated for seven Emmys and four Golden Globes for Seinfeld - and never won. A travesty.

Here’s a very Christmassy question. Where’s a good place to buy jeans?

Why can’t supermarkets and convenience stores chill non-alcoholic beer? They’re always stored on shelves next to the fridge, but never in the fridge itself. Do non-drinkers not deserve cold beverages? Are we being punished for something? Answers if you have them, please.

I've curated an 'Alternative Christmas' playlist on Spotify. Everything from Slow Club, Shame, The Wombats, Julian Casablancas and Emmy the Great to Half Man Half Biscuit, The Staves, The Unthanks, RUN DMC and Saint Etienne. 69 tracks and counting....enjoy! open.spotify.com/playlist/3un...

Ah.

All the bands I’ve seen in 2024. I would consider this a quiet year.

My favourite albums of 2024. I’ve ranked them but the order is inessential really. Anything I’ve missed, you reckon?

Classic Barry Shitpeas. He gets so worked up by the end.

Been watching back Charlie Brooker’s catalogue of ‘Wipe’ shows on YouTube lately. Weekly Wipe is the best of the lot, preferable to Screen, News and Game. Barry Shitpeas is an all-time great comedy character.

Are The Guardian going to start limiting access to their app to paid subscribers or contributors only? Did I hear that correctly?

Got some new Search Results in the post today. And ordered a limited edition new The Murder Capital single tonight as well. @bandcamp.com is the best.

I can actually think of several uses for Instagram’s new option that allows users to schedule DMs. All of which are legitimate and not creep in any way.

Mind blown.

New t-shirt arrived just in time for Christmas.

NEW // Read @barrylandy.bsky.social's first dispatch from Denmark as he spoke to a Silkeborg supporter about Trivela's impending takeover. "We don't care, we don't want anything to do with you. This is our club, we don't want this multi-club ownership.” www.loveisthedrog.ie/p/just-cause... (€)

Oh dear.

Hello all! I know many of you have followed me for football stuff but, frankly, I’m not really all that bothered about posting about football on here. There’s enough of it about. I’ll direct you over to @loveisthedrog.bsky.social - where I will be posting about all things Drogs.

Thanks to the legend Larry McQuillan for this shot of me with the FAI Cup yesterday. I was honoured to be asked to MC the Drogheda United 2024 Academy Awards. Had a great experience - very new one for me. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone who helped put together a great event.

Back in Whelans tonight for what seems the first time in a long time. Really Good Time, Affection to Rent and Lord Ormond made it an evening to remember. The former are a serious proposition.

People want Bluesky to becoming a welcoming platform, free of intolerance and vitriol. But the same people insist on talking about politics incessantly. Here’s an idea - why not talk about books, music, art, culture, sport, cooking, baking, stamp collecting - or y’know, anything else!

Drogheda is actually very pretty at Christmas time.

Went to see Heretic tonight. I’m very much here for all of Hugh Grant’s later-career role choices. The man is a masterful character actor.

I wrote and published this on Sunday and I’m still getting texts, DMs and emails about. I haven’t got anywhere near to replying to everyone yet. To say I’m humbled by the response would be an understatement.

Good morning, good people.

I’ve already posted this on the platform that shall not be named. But I need to get into the habit of posting here instead. www.loveisthedrog.ie/p/on-fai-cup...
