🤷♂️ I’m on Safari on iPhone (iOS 18.3.1) - I’m sure it’ll be fine on laptop, just thought I’d let you know.

Great stuff Andy!
BTW, the web page font rendering of many of the terminal screens makes them hard to read (on my phone at least).

Although it’s a word not yet recognised by any dictionary, I’m rooting for the word ‘unpresidented’.

I encourage my professional hardware red team to think like real hackers and to be creative with their attacks. As a result, we have some fantastic, flexible, low-cost tooling developed in-house, which is generally preferable to the high-end tools we also have available.

Necessity is the mother of invention etc.
“Sure, we can protect this device against all security violations, except if the attacker is nation state funded, or is Fred in his shed. Nation states will keep the exploit quiet, Fred will post a PoC on GitHub and a walk-through on YouTube.”

From a threat modelling point of view, the motivations are different, professional hardware evaluators have limited time for DUT assessment and the scope is clearly defined, whereas a hobbyist can go beyond the expected elapsed time and aren’t limited by the manufacturer’s threat model.

I know plenty of hardware hackers who do it professionally as well as for a hobby. Here, the differentiators when as a hobby are often the lower budget for equipment, increased time available, and increased chance of collaboration and knowledge sharing/publication.

I just replaced a central locking actuator on my wife’s car before it was due to be looked at by the dealership. She appreciated that far more than when I replaced the broken element in the oven, then cancelled her order for a new “Slide & Hide” oven like the ones they use on Bake Off.

The most iconic track of the 80s was the one you could make Daley Thompson run around by hammering buttons on your keyboard.

The radio just reminded me of the existence of the band Simple Minds by playing one of their biggest; I’d completely forgotten about them!

It’s a fact that “Vienna” was one of the most powerful 80s tunes; if you disagree you should probably just shaddup you face.
