Why not? You know he's got his eyes on that big oval office couch.

It depends. I've seen both in financial reports. Ideally, when percentage returns are provided, they'll state whether they are arithmetic or logrithmic returns. Arithmetic returns are by far the more common. If not stated explicitly, in most contexts you should assume returns are arithmetic.

You're right if you use simple returns. But if you use logarithmic returns, a 10% down move followed by a 10% up move really do get you back where you started. Logarithmic returns are popular in certain segments of finance specifically because of this property.

This may have been intentional, giving his real insiders a convenient pretext to buy.

.....just one that hurts the US much more than it hurts other countries. I think my initial point is still valid, though. I can definitely see Europe investing heavily in domestic defense. I just can't see governments sending tens of billions of dollars of aid to Ukraine with unemployment at 10%.

Fair point. And this crisis will be abnormal. The US will see massive inflation and cratering demand for foreign goods, but all those factories in Asia will still be producing. Supply > Demand means rock-bottom prices for European imports from Asia. It'll still be a global financial crisis.....

That's just my take. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Just look at what happened in 2008. In a financial crisis nations focus on themselves...they basically suspend all foreign aid. In autocratic russia, Putin can just tighten his belt and go on fighting. But I can't see Europe continuing to send equipment to Ukraine if unemployment is 10%.

Yes, but trade wars hit everybody. The drop in hydrocarbon prices directly weakens Russia, but the collapse in financial markets and global trade is going to hurt Ukraine and, more important, all the partners supplying Ukraine. On net, I'm not sure this trade war will hurt Russia more than Ukraine.

And for the inevitable readers who don't know about China's Great Leap Forward...yes, that comment was satire.

You can't make a great leap forward without first taking a few steps backward. I, for one, welcome the coming era of self-sufficiency. Trump is bringing steel production back to the USA! Soon, every home will have a steel furnace in its backyard. If China can do it, the US can too!

Makes sense. Within a year Moldova will have an economy larger than the US. Two years tops.

I was a fan of russia until around 2009. Maybe I should have known better, but from 2000 up to ~2009 the economy had been opening up and Khuilo / Bukhloilo were modernizing. Millions of lives were improving. The last of my support for russia died in 2014 when little green men entered Crimea.

Not true. Belarus and russia love the US right now! Foreign intelligence agencies in authoritarian states couldn't be happier.

Restore russia's access to the world market for fertilizer exports? W? T? F? Fertilizer export is the ONE thing russia has had ZERO trouble exporting since the start of this war. Thank goodness for sunflower seeds.

russia still has a Black Sea fleet?

I'm not sure how anyone could associate a six-pack with Trump. A 20-piece, on the other hand.....

It's not just upon entry to the USA. CBP has started targeting departing travellers of interest, approaching them as their flight begins boarding. Passengers are given a choice: surrender their devices and board their flight, or miss the flight and wait hours while CBP conducts an enhanced search.

I think Ukraine should fight on, even without the USA. But I'm not Ukrainian, so it's not for me to decide. It's Ukraine's choice. As long as Ukraine continues the good fight, I will continue to support Ukraine. For as long as it takes.

Because Finnish soldiers don't make "peace" with russians. Finns knows two things: sauna and whooping Vatnik ass. And they just spent all winter in the sauna. After all, they're the country that hunts Santa for sport.

Pretty sure it's Elon's business. Donald's position is purely symbolic. Kind of like the British or Japanese monarchy, but without the trappings of dignity that are normally be associated with the post.

Joe Biden's weak leadership has allowed NATO to threaten America's northern border for too long. The only way for Trump to protect the English speakers of North America and take the fight to the fascist regime in Greenland is by first denazifying Canada.

Perhaps make it clear that Orban's Hungary won't be welcome in whatever European security pact takes the place of NATO.
