The grief and rage I've been feeling as I've been advising undergrads--some of them international students--about whether/where/how to pursue grad school/careers in science in this moment is boundless 💔

HUMANS are an Everything Technology. We need tools that we can use, not machines that will live our lives for us.
And not Agent software that burns forests and slimes rivers so someone can say they made a billion rather than a paltry twenty million.

Anyway. Writing matters. Your work of teaching matters. Yes, the conditions are hard and maybe even unacceptable. Giving the work over to a non-thinking, non-feeling, non-experiencing machine is not the way. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/john-...

A key idea we develop: *causal theories* can imply *descriptive research questions*.
Consider a simple theory: A -> B. Given these two theoretically relevant objects (A and B), we can articulate numerous research questions.
We build a "ladder" of research questions, some causal, some descriptive.

3/4. If we accept the idea that moving a person from one place to another undoes rights and disempowers the judiciary, we are endorsing the basic Nazism practice that enabled the killing of millions.
