It's the kind of thing that needs a meaningful context. If you have a really open game world, you can use the strength/hp interplay to guide the player and stat gate them. But if things are so on rails you can't even get better weapons without hitting plot triggers then what's the point?

I have to imagine some of it is cutscenes? Even the levels feel like they have unique tracks between bosses sometimes

I mean it's strange because Rebirth also has open zones AND basically every boss fight has a unique theme, but i wouldn't be surprised in Rebirth had a higher budget (which feels like mixed priorities to me)

The FE7 version tbh

FFX's clarity of purpose is still staggering even now. It's crazy how the game just knows exactly what it is literally the whole time, in a way FF had attempted before but never completely nailed and has really struggled to recapture.

I think early on it's easy to come to the conclusion that it's functionally another Persona game but once you get even a little way it it becomes clear that it has a different overall loop and mechanical focus

These stories don't even feel consistent between each other so I feel like he must just get random ideas in his head and kind of latch onto it in a way that comes off as a bit stubborn.

One of the two no-name imperial generals you fight feels like the most of what they would have done. The younger one that's sort of bumbling. But after the boss with him he just drops out of the plot altogether and only shows back up in a side quest you can only reach with the time travel dog.

I more meant the basic concept of that sort of cartoon comedy character, unless you meant specifically an ultros cameo in your original post?

I honestly feel like it would fit in with FFXV's tone but that game is just so aggressively unfinished they just kind of failed to add anything like that. Maybe they wouldn't have felt it would work considering their Gilgamesh, but it genuinely could have slotted in just fine

I think it's probably also hard to conceive just how much more accessible PC has become over the years as a platform both for developers and consumers. If you wanted to play most games you needed a console

I didn't realize this dude wasn't even 50 yet. He's in for a big surprise in about 5 years to be frank

I imagine burn-in is no longer as much of a worry, so these sorts of attract modes have become less common because they serve less of a "utility" to justify making them.

Sometimes you also get to start playing before street date, but every major release has a day 1 patch that fixes several things and changes narrative elements so lol

It's fucked up that the gba version of 13th struggle is one of the better ones because it's the only one where the melody is actually at the forefront

I've always felt like the score chasing element was kind of core, but I'm sure there are counterexamples to even that. aside from that it's mostly a vibe.

I don't know that I fully agree. The broader implication is that they created Hyrule functionally out of spite for Null, which was just existing. Since it's on the downfall line, there's also a read that they relinquished Hyrule's fate to chance with Null dead and it's purpose served.

I would say that the team also stuck very tight to a lot of how 14 already works, but removed a lot of what makes that game engaging to make way for the action game stuff. Probably good for planning, but when it came time to make an engaging action game they didn't quite cross the crevice imo.
