Brimestone! And my butterfly year begins.... @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social

As expected a nice set of butterfly records received over this sunny weekend. Red Admiral, Peacock, Brimstone, and this years first Small Tortoiseshell and Comma for Cambridgeshire. Thanks everyone who submitted. The year is getting going now. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social @bc-suffolk.bsky.social

One week to go until the Cambridge Half Marathon. I'll be raising money for Addebrookes Charitable Trust, to say thanks for all the great support they have provided my family this year. Please consider sponsoring me. Just a few pounds is great πŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ www.justgiving.com/page/edward-...

Get ready for survey season! Its only a month to go until the start of UKBMS Transect surveys. Brush up on the survey method with our resources here -

Landelijke Vlinderdas 2025 - Dutch National Butterfly Day 2025 - 650 volunteers present.

Listening to @jamesshooter.bsky.social in Belgium talk about Black Storks. Is there any evidence they were a UK breeding bird in post glacial times? The Fens must have been great for them. @ajaytegala.bsky.social

Spring is on its way! Look out for these butterflies and moths in your gardens and local green spaces πŸ¦‹πŸŒ·πŸŒ± What have you seen recently? Don't forget to tag us in your butterfly and moth sightings. πŸ“· #SaveButterflies #MothsMatter

Looking forward to a flurry of butterfly records this weekend. The mornings might be frost, but by early afternoon look out for Brimstones, perhaps a Coma or Peacock

Please submit any last records to Edward and Rob in the coming weeks

Just seen 1st @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social of year @ukbutterflies.bsky.social @wildlifebcn.bsky.social surprised to see it was a Small Tortoiseshell than Brimstone. @epollard.bsky.social

Another reason to celebrate today. FANTASTIC news for biodiversity in England. Important to recognise when Labour, Defra & @naturalengland.bsky.social do something really hugely positive for nature, both symbolically and in practice. Well done them. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Next month, we'll be at the UK Butterfly Recorders meeting where we'll be sharing the population and distribution trends for 2024, and enjoying other butterfly talks. Reserve your free place here - buff.ly/40ZdpOA

Interesting news regarding the iconic Grantchester Meadows just outside Cambridge. It would be great to see the grazing massively reduced so they can me managed as species rich hay meadows, rather than pasture. www.cambridgeppf.org/news/cppf-ta...

It’s official, 2024 was the worst year for bumblebees since records began🚨 The latest findings from #BeeWalk, our national bumblebee monitoring scheme, have revealed bumblebee numbers declined by almost a quarter (22.5%) across Great BritainπŸ’” Read on: www.bumblebeeconservation.org/british-bumb...

Old Park in Canterbury is a superb area of acid grassland with a flora including Harebell, Bedstraw (or Clove-scented) Broomrape & Mossy Stonecrop, & loads of Nightingales. The MoD owns it and has put it up for sale. Join the campaign to save this extraordinary site canterburyoldpark.org.uk

An actual start to moths for 2025 - Hebrew Character and Common Quaker. If there'd been a Muslin too, I could've done a faux Dave Allen joke #mothmania #TeamMoth #MothsMatter

At last some butterflies Brimstones (3), Peacock and Red Admiral reported by Β© Dave Miller at #StanwellMoor @savebutterflies.bsky.social

2025 has started. Two Brimstones seen today. Babraham, Cambs. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social

FIRST REPORT: Peacock, 21st Feb 25. Cambridgeshire

Public event. Friday 21st March the Cambs recorder @epollard.bsky.social will be in Ely talking about the butterflies of The Fens. What once was, and what could be. Hosted by @wildlifebcn.bsky.social www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2025-...

Most butterfly species overwinter as larvae (www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species_phen...). One memorable encounter was finding an overwintering Silver-washed Fritillary larva on its silk pad. I like to think that one of my heroes, Frohawk, would have appreciated this photo (his illustration attached)!

Over on LinkedIn. Putting together a list of large (>500 ha) areas managed primarily for nature. Perhaps a few gaps. Take a look and add, or perhaps someone already has this dbase? www.linkedin.com/posts/nick-p...

Please leave ivy alone. Especially in nature reserves. It does not harm trees. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I thought a chart derived from an analysis of records might help me to understand the 2024 butterfly season in Bedfordshire. #Bedfordshire #butterflies

Review of the butterfly and moth research on actions shows most evidence covers butterfly conservation, focuses on community-level responses, originates from UK and USA, from studies using least robust designs, assesses actions about agriculture. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Edward will be doing more talks in March and April. We will share more information when we get it. Tx

I've written a news story about the worrying slow-down in Natural England designating SSSIs. NE is full of brilliant people, working so hard for nature. But it appears almost impossible at moment for them to designate sites under immediate threat of development. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Welcome @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social go.bsky.app/G4nh67F

We are looking forward to learning more about how the area will be developed. There is the potential for chalk grassland restoration for example

The chequered skipper was reintroduced to England from Belgian source populations, following an intricate study to match habitat from native to introduced sites, which differed across Belgian populations. Still, two habitat matching populations seem incompatible! 1/ doi.org/10.1111/eva.... #consgen

Hugely heartening news from Essex. Middlewick not saved yet but bravo Colchester City Council for listening to expert advice & having the courage to change their minds. In the current anti-newt-and-bat climate that's especially admirable. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Important new study on the reintroduction of the Chequered Skipper Carterocephalus palaemon to England. The two Belgium sources did very differently (not sure why the link shows Orangutans! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
