#NoKings Cincinnati.

"Will we fail the final test of democracy because we no longer understand that democracy depends not on institutions — but on us?"

Original art work from Holly Berkeley Fletcher. @hollybfletcher.bsky.social

Fascinating article, especially for those of us who spent time living in communist China.

This is the way I feel when someone complains about traffic every time someone advocates for a more equitable distribution of street space. I don't personally want to get rid of cars, but I would like to feel less burdened by auto traffic when I walk and bike places.

I don't want to give up my car. I *do* want to drive it less and make my neighborhood and city more safe and comfortable for those outside cars.

Sprawl doesn’t solve the underlying problem. It is the underlying problem.

So true. And in my neighborhood it's the same places where people regularly report crashes and near misses for pedestrians.

I'm in a mood. This picture cracked me up.

A rare sighting at the Bird Buddy -- the Randy Bird.

The only thing that happens when you make excuses for "my side" when your side acts in ways that are inconsistent with your beliefs and principles is that you betray your beliefs and principles.

I hope I live long enough to see my city's streets truly become for people and not just for cars.

I'll be attending a protest march this Saturday in Cincinnati. My sign will say the same thing as JVL's newsletter headline: Bring Him Home.

“ Car bloat” exacerbates problems that affect everyone, regardless of how they travel.

This is the way. For most of us, the place where we can make the biggest difference is in our own backyards. That's where I've poured my energy.

Cincinnati #handsoff, despite the rain.

“What happened? You helped elect Donald Trump you fucking moron” - @timmiller.bsky.social

Statistics: • America’s road traffic safety record is a disaster. The US Secretary of Transportation: • Keeping driving everybody. Rail transit is the safety disaster.

“The simple act of being outside seemed to require vigilance." This is how I feel every single time I take a walk in my "walkable" neighborhood.

"Trump cannot control himself. His own party is terrified of him. Major institutions are bowing to him. The main bulwark is the court system, which in the Alito-Thomas era is not reassuring to hear.... It’s all up to us. The people will have to rise."

I'm with Charlie. Clowns don't carry flamethrowers. They may carry balloons, rubber chickens and ukuleles, like my partner Richard back in his clowning days. They inspire joy, not despair.

Thank you, Holly, for this reminder to keep looking for the light. It’s breadcrumbs like these that help me when I’m faltering.

Last Friday night several NE Cincinnati neighborhoods experienced an out of control driver on a road rampage. Left out of this article are the accounts of pedestrians nearly hit by this driver - two young teens walking near their school and a family with 3 young kids waiting to cross the street.

Welcome home, JD -- Cincinnati shows up to welcome you.

The South's democracy deficit is becoming our country's democracy deficit.

Preview of March statistics: A crash in my neighborhood last Sunday sent one pedestrian to the hospital with serious injuries. In total, one speeding, out of control driver impacted 5 other cars and the pedestrian, right in the heart of the business district.

Welcome home, JD!

We're working to make the current reality better where I live. It's going to take a long time.

"A study by the Victoria Transport Policy Institute found that shifting just 5% of urban trips from cars to active transportation modes significantly decreases congestion and road maintenance expenses."

The Ohio Statehouse, where the will of the people goes to die.

The lesson we should have learned from COVID traffic reductions is that our streets are overengineered for speed. "If we don't change our design approach, increased congestion may unintentionally save lives during peak periods, but our streets will remain really dangerous."

I've never felt uncomfortable traveling abroad as an American. I will this year.

Cincinnati homeowners and businesses -- would you be willing to pay $150/year to have the city take over the responsibility of maintaining our sidewalks?

We're way overdue for a strong dose of moral courage. I don't see much coming from the political class so we must rely on each other to stand up and speak out.

"Think about what lines you will cross and that you will not cross. They are not as obvious, perhaps, as a line on a map, or a line of trenches at the front. But we cannot pretend that they are not there. And if we cross them, we will no longer be ourselves."

Love the new acronym for Trump - PINO (President in Name Only). From the folks at @contrariannews.org.
