Maybe in many ways their regime suits their population ---what you find appalling is perfectly in line with most Chinese perspectives.

oops...sorry....I think this is that we are still allowing tech to make the rules. A nasty habit we got into as the world wide web developed. Somehow they convinced legislatures, it would be better if they self-regulated and not to kill the new technology.
