A month ago, Donald Trump issued a memecoin and made millions from it. Just now, the SEC changed its position to say that memecoins are not subject to regulatory oversight, which benefits Trump. Surely no possibility of a conflict or improper influence there...

Yes 👏🏻 to 👏🏻 this 👏🏻 Love the framing and the substance.

Still cannot believe we spent all of November & December talking about how it was <checks notes> Harris/Walz & The Democrats who <checks notes again> lost touch with the political center & Real Folkz & ignored Kitchen Table Issues. Congrats everyone. Truly, well done.

The idea of taxes paid with corporate equity rather than cash is catching on! Just yesterday @washingtonpost.com published oped about such a tax capitalizing a sovereign wealth fund. I have multiple papers proposing this &happy to see it go mainstream. Tho I disagree that should replace corp tax.

Just a sitting President of the United States applying to register the name of the President of the United States as a trademark for, among other things, "creating an on-line virtual environment for exchange of digital collectibles featuring images, sound, videos and texts of Donald J Trump"

The United States now playing the role that communist satellite states once played in the UN: sponsoring resolutions in its own name but on behalf of Moscow.

Meanwhile, some things really are improving! 👏🏻

Thank you to @columbiauniversity.bsky.social Law School for hosting me and @polcz.bsky.social today! We’ll be presenting our research on how many of the harms of generative AI can be addressed through fractional public ownership of AI. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Kristi Noem told attendees at a CPAC dinner Friday that Trump directed her to launch a taxpayer-funded ad campaign and demanded she thank him in the ads. No other outlet bothered to write about this, despite the admin blowing up to $200M on these ads www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

Do this. Say this. 👇🏻

Yeah, uh, that’s literally why we were worried

@adamserwer.bsky.social nails it here--the real goals of the attack on DEI. Read and share. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

No matter how preposterous, the Times headlines nearly every Trump story as if it were written by the White House comms team.

Great news to get on a Friday night!

THR: “.. Paramount now signaling that it’s prepared to go on the offensive .. leveraging the threat of uncovering information about Trump’s financials, including with respect to his social media company .. and the cryptocurrency he launched, in discovery.” www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

The very basics of constitutional protections in the US are crumbling fast. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/19/u...

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 1%, it can collect $13. For every $1 the IRS spends auditing the top 0.1%, it can collect $26. Laying off 7,000 IRS employees (during tax season) isn't about efficiency. It's about making it easier for the rich to evade taxes.

Taxes are how we use the law to share what we have. Musk and Trump want to stop that. We should not let them.

Not gonna lie. Still get a thrill every time I'm on TaxProfBlog. And this time with two friends! @polcz.bsky.social @davidgamage.bsky.social . taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog...

Congress where are you?

Today's the day! Co-presenting my work in progress on how to tax AI with @polcz.bsky.social at Mizzou! Fractional public ownership of generative AI is both doable and necessary. More details here papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

First nuclear weapons management, now this. No one - Democrat or Republican - voted for this kind of incompetence.

This may explain the outraging @nytimes.com headlines but certainly doesn’t excuse them

Reminder: we already paid for this. This is our tax $$ he’s trashing.

Emergency lawsuit is right 🚨

Not enough coverage of this IMO www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

This @aflcio.org brief seeks to enjoin IRS from giving access to taxpayer data to DOGE. I hope they win.

A lot less planes were crashing when a gay guy was in charge of USDOT. Bring back DEI.

I keep seeing this. Guys, their literal job is to figure out what to do. They are not helpless even if they are not the majority. I really hope we can stop treating some of the most powerful people in the world as helpless and without sentience.

A fav thing about being a professor is when people I don't know somehow encounter my ideas and cite them. A team of scholars and activists in Canada who are working to finance renewable energy projects for indigenous communities just cited my reparations research! Solidarity across borders.

This is a crime. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

AND ALSO THERE'S A COUP

*gulp*

I dug into the only US source cited by Randy Barnett & Ilan Wurman for their theory - against birthright citizenship - in @nytimes @nytopinion: Edward Bates in 1862. He doubly contradicted their argument: "Birthright Citizenship: The Bates Backfire" shugerblogcom.wordpress.com/2025/02/16/b...

Yeah I’d want out, too

All I want for Valentines Day is a 100% tax rate on billionaires. For more details, see what @vanessawilliamson.bsky.social and I wrote for the Florida Tax Review about Thomas Paine’s billionaire tax. Seems more relevant now than ever!

Not the topline concern (which is the brazen collapse of rule of law) but what happens to federal borrowing costs when multi-trillion tax cuts plus incapacitated IRS make clear to all markets that USA can’t pay its debts? And what does that mean for inflation? www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

This is like a bank robber getting to fire the cops and disable the alarms just before he strolls into the bank lobby.

Great reminder to embed democratic norms in every aspect of my teaching. Couldn’t be more urgent.

Is ‘do all the illegal things all at once’ a tactic or just their new normal… ?
