@laurenrodda.bsky.social, @nicelab.bsky.social , @jnpruneda.bsky.social and I wrote an OpEd on the impacts of NIH cuts on Oregon: www.bizjournals.com/portland/new... It was signed by over 450 OHSU researchers! It’s unfortunately paywalled, DM me if you’d like a gift link or a pdf of it.

I am relieved that Francis Collins is advocating for science, but hope that he and other senior current/former NIH people continue to use their influence to stop the devastation of American research. www.science.org/content/arti...

What are the targets of beta-lactam antibiotics in Mycobacterium tuberculosis? Find out here... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Why are former leaders of NIH silent on all of the devastating cuts? Where is Anthony Fauci? Where is Francis Collins? Their silence is demoralizing.

Pro Tip: Be early or on time to meetings, especially with people whose opinions of you matter (e.g., collaborators, mentors, bosses). My dad was "old-school" so I was trained that a minute late is LATE. We were early or on-time to everything...⏰

New story on NIH intramural research issues. www.science.org/content/arti...

I hope that all the wonderful scientists at NIH are hanging on. Your work is critical to the health of the American people. You are valued by the community. 💚

UPDATE ON FUNDING These are data through 2/21/25. The lag in Reporter really does appear to be about a week. There was a second mini-pause as suspected from internal reports, but grants are being awarded. About 21% new or competitive renewals (compared to 29% in 2017, and 22% in 2021

ATTENTION The Washington Post is collecting data about funding issues. Please consider contributing. thewashingtonpost.formstack.com/forms/scient...

Nothing about kids dying from measles is normal. Anti-vaxxers like RFK Jr. and the Republicans who enable them are responsible for every single one of these deaths.

A single death from a vaccine preventable disease is a tragedy. I love vaccines. I don't want to be crippled by polio, scarred by pox, or die of cervical cancer.

WBUR story up www.wbur.org/news/2025/02...

Here is the corresponding data for NSF with some key events marked...Remarkably consistent with the NIH data.

American science is undergoing a massive set-back driven by Trump. The president is gutting science agencies and banning DEI efforts. Now, non-profits are following him. HHMI is halting their DEI programs, shame on them: www.science.org/content/arti...

Research is under attack and we all need to be paying attention. The Friday announcement by NIH (capping indirects at 15%) is just another ridiculous decision put in place with no thought or reason from a dangerous orange buffoon.

Started off this morning emailing my Senators and Congressman about the NIH and the potential damage being done by unnecessary disruptions. They need to hear from us loud and clear. Constituents matter to them as one of the primary purposes of a politician is to get re-elected (and its their job).

Here is deeply troubling news for the NIH, courtesy of the new President: www.science.org/content/arti... NIH needs to push back. We need to push back. NIH-funded research is for the benefit of all.

Overjoyed and honestly relieved to share a Chem Rev magnum opus from Brian Chen & Julia Li titled Synthetic Lipid Biology! In it, we organize efforts across numerous fields to create, manipulate, and analyze lipids and biomembranes. Check it out! doi.org/10.1021/acs.... #lipidtime #chemsky #chembio

This morning I'm thinking of Marty Goddard, who invented the first "Rape Kit" (1970s). The kit standardized collection of evidence and is still used today. *In keeping with long tradition, a man got the credit for this invention after Goddard conceived of the idea, shared it, and advocated for it.

"Remembering the breadth of female participation will not only end science’s ‘disappearing woman’ trick, it might also illuminate the current gender imbalance by making the point that science is, and always has been, for women as much as for men." -2019 (Claire Jones) www.nature.com/articles/d41...

New blog post I cobbled together for the Bristol Reproducibility Network Ethical Academic Publishing: How to Make Academic Publishing Fairer, More Open and Less Wasteful openresearchbristol.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/2024/09/23/e...

I am torn between deep sadness and embarrassment that I didn't know who Gertrude Elion was until 10 minutes ago. Elion is a nobel-prize winning biochemist/pharmacologist who developed amazing drugs (anti-virals; anti-cancers) to benefit humanity. Thank you Elion for your contributions!

#Chembio crowd! Come and join #ESBOC25, the oldest Chemical Biology Symposium in Europe, in its 58th (!) instalment, on 28th-30th May 2025 - in beautiful and scenic Gregynog/Wales! Chaired by none other than Olalla Vazquez and with a rockstar lineup: www.esboc.org.uk

Just learned at the CZI imaging meeting that only 0.5% of brain research has been done in the female brain.

I want to share this resource, which is a portal for chemical probe compounds: www.chemicalprobes.org Thank you Milka Kostic!

My lab has a new pre-print on bioRxiv: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... This paper examines proteomic change in Mtb in response to carbon starvation. We describe the effect of CS on drug targets (see Figure 5).

Followed my dear science friends here. Hope this platform doesn't get taken over by a megalomaniac.
