wrote an essay about writing in english, my first for @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/04/25/o...

“A shocking criminality and the diffusion of traditional Mexican images in the stream of global entertainment have erased any trace of a ‘special relationship’ between the national culture and death.” From the archive:

People in the tri-state area! On Tuesday at 5pm, I’ll be speaking at Yale about my book, “The Op-Ed Novel.” We will also talk about journalism as an object of study and praxis. If you are in the area and have time, please join us!

Come over if you are in the area!

Tomorrow, I’ll be speaking about my book at the Five Colleges in western Mass. If you’re in the area and have some time, please join us. I’ll be talking about journalism, literature, and the politics of fictionalizing current affairs.

More from the latest “On Our Nightstands”: @becquer.bsky.social suggests “Canoes” by Maylis de Kerangal, trans. Jessica Moore. “Alaska haunts the collection’s metaphorical title as well as de Kerangal’s insatiable inquiry into the role of place in North America.”

These get confused with one another. Journalism is a social practice: reporting the news. The Media is the attention business. The product is audiences. The Press is an institution that endures over time as people come in and out. The news industry is a seller of information with recency value.

Looking forward to @becquer.bsky.social's visit in a month.

Please note that the new deadline for submission to our Hispanic issue (edited by @becquer.bsky.social) is May 1

Another beautiful essay by Charlotte Rogers on language and aphasia, this time at @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social. Absolutely cannot wait for the memoir.

If you are an early career humanist or humanistically oriented social scientist and are looking for a six-month fellowship, I strongly recommend the @kwi-essen.bsky.social. A great research experience and environment. Truly. Deadline: 28 February 2025 www.kulturwissenschaften.de/calls-fellow...

Today at @publicbooks.bsky.social, Charlotte Rogers has an amazing essay up on aphasia (a disorder that affects one's ability to communicate), Carlos Fonseca's "Austral" @fsgbooks.bsky.social & James Marcus's bio of Emerson @princetonupress.bsky.social. www.publicbooks.org/when-languag...

Do you want to know what I have in common with Dickinson, Kafka, and Proust? Visit this wonderful @harvardpress.bsky.social website and find out! Hint: #MLA25 Also ➡️ @ericcalderwood.bsky.social @briankgoodman.bsky.social @thesaramarcus.bsky.social @ksgruesz.bsky.social www.hup.harvard.edu/mla

#mla2025 attendees and friends following from home: @harvardpress.bsky.social is having a sale! Use promo code for MLA25 to get 40% off select HUP titles. Might I humbly/shamelessly suggest my book, "On Earth or in Poems: The Many Lives of al-Andalus"?

Finally got around to reading Thomas Meaney’s latest, this time for @newleftreview.bsky.social. Delivered in pitch perfect deadpan with no editorializing, it is equal parts funny, infuriating, depressing, and perplexing. newleftreview.org/sidecar/post...

I published several things this year that I’d love for you to check out, if you’re so inclined. The most important of these was my first book, “The Op-Ed Novel” (@harvardpress.bsky.social). Officially, it’s an academic book, but it’s really much more than that. www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978067...

Lawfare + culture war = right wing populism www.sinpermiso.info/textos/en-un...

I chose Layla Martínez’s “Woodworm” @twolinespress.bsky.social/@amordemadreed.bsky.social) as my @publicbooks.bsky.social Public Pick for this year. It is equal parts surgical and mesmerizing, unsettling and unforgettable. You can see all our picks here. Enjoy! www.publicbooks.org/public-picks...

So UNC Chapel Hill can hire Bill Belichick for $30 million but humanities courses at UNC Asheville and UNC Greensboro cost too much money 🤔

Today at @johnshopkins.bsky.social, @bibliophilenick.bsky.social will be presenting his fantastic new book, “Cervantine Blackness” (@psupress.bsky.social). Join us! Warning: intellectual fireworks to be expected.
