If you goad trump into taking the worse path are you responsible for the damage it causes? Especially when not pointing out his 🐔 actions risks him repeating the tactic for more damage later? Is it time he and his supporters learned a lesson?

... But I do agree that the other end state would be Ukraine becoming a Russian vassal, which would be bad for Europe and the US.
comment in response to post
Didn't all of those formally end with a treaty albeit ones dictated almost wholly by one side? If Ukraine manages to push back to the 2014 lines, or even retake Crimea that may ultimately cause political change in Russia, but Ukraine doesn't have to force change in Russia to take bck the land....
comment in response to post
Depends what you mean by military victory. Ukrainian leopard 2s pushing through red square - nope. Ukraine retaking land back or close to 2014 lines? Maybe. But ultimately all wars end up at the negotiating table.

God, what I wouldn't give for a decent remake/reimagining of Columbo. A professional relationship with his colleges. No past trauma, addiction or relationship problems. Just good old fashioned outsmarting of smug wankers by an underestimated everyman.

A rerun of their old tactic of climigntgry could pay for everything by saving on out EU budget payments. When's the bus rolling out?

Are you from the UK? Closing roads for events is not uncommon. Cars do not have priority on roads even when they aren't closed. Would you be defending the driver if they barged through the London marathon? Or Nottinghill Carnival? Or Remembrance services?
comment in response to post
...thus implying the driver's decision to break multiple laws and injure scores of people was justified because of the club and fans' legal actions. This is "it's her fault I got drunk and assaulted her because she was wearing a short skirt" writ large
comment in response to post
No you originally blamed the club - who had a legal public parade, arranged in conjunction with the police etc for which parts of the city road network were shut down for and claimed the driver had the right to drive his car anywhere at anytime and the fans had no legal right to be on the streets...
comment in response to post
... your current tone is at odds with your earlier tone, which I would advise you not to voice if you are ever in Liverpool, the city that still doesn't buy the Sun after it's treatment of the Hillsbourgh disaster (similarly blamed on fans).
comment in response to post
All good points but a world away from these positions. Which are inflammatory and legally wrong. Having a taxed car does not entitle you to drive wherever you want whenever. The authorities are perfectly entitled to close roads off for various reasons - including parades...
comment in response to post
Somewhat away from the "poor tax paying driver was terrorised by nasty football hooligans whilst driving on a road he has every right to drive down"
comment in response to post
And if he had *only* hit the people banging on his car he might have some (though probaly not much) defence. But there are 40+ innocent people he deliberately swerved into. The "please your honour, I was scared by the bad men" defence on only gets you so far.
comment in response to post
...the facts we do know are A) he was on drugs B) he followed an ambulance through a barricade C) he veered into innocent pedestrians rather than away from them Pretty hard to blame thr football club or the pedestrians for his actions
comment in response to post
But you have no idea why the pedestrians were banging on the car. It's entirely possible he had already hit some pedestrians at that point (some reports say he's hit some pedestrians, stalled, then restarted whilst people were trying to remove him from the car and then rampage)...
comment in response to post
So someone gets off their face on drugs, illegally follows an ambulance through a police roadblock to a lawful event, panics, runs over 50 poeple - and you're saying he bears no responsibility? What if he was really drunk? Your judgement might make you unfit to hold a driving licence.
comment in response to post
And how does this affect your judgement? Does paying road tax give a driver licence to injure or kill pedestrians (the majority of whom will also have paid road tax) whilst under the influence of drugs?

That's the point: he has immunity for presidential duties but he is claiming this isn't a presidential duty so he doesn't have to give details. Surely even the current SCOTUS can't find a way to frame immunity for both presidential and personal acts without saying "actually King"
comment in response to post
If he'd claiming this dinner is a personal function and therfore doesn't need to release details, does that mean that he wouldn't be covered by presidential immunity as it only covers presidential duties and actions (however broad)?

Should be the next detective. He could make star wars refences and paint minitures in the shack with the lizard. That would be his quirk. Being a massive nerd. I'd watch that.

The mad thi g is thr BBC *can* do it properly www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... But for some reason the impartial research based report plays 2nd fiddle to the "both sides" bullshit by big name reporters who rely on access to politicians (and thus keeping them sweet)
comment in response to post
I don't pretend it doesn't matter, but I do think it has an influence on the public debate far in excess of it's actual size. To listen to certain portions of the press and Parliament the effect will be akin to the pit closures or the fall of British Leyland.

Most of the fish caught are herring and mackerel and we just don't have thr taste for it in the UK. Trade is good. It's no less sustainable for herring to be landed and sold in the EU than the UK. Fish have to be shipped long distances by boat to their markets pretty much by definition.
comment in response to post
Genuine question: are there any towns or villages left where catching fish forms a vital part of the local economy? If every fishing boat sank today would there be any blighted communities where the fishermen couldn't get alternative employment?
comment in response to post
Universities did lose out from Brexit for zero gain (and probably losses) in the fishing industries. This deal will probs ly help the fishing industry because there is no point in catching something you can't easily sell and most fish caught in UK waters (herring & mackerel) are bought by the EU.
comment in response to post
More importantly it would be easier to sell the majority of the fish caught in UK waters (herring and mackerel) to the biggest buyers (the EU) and also out most valuable fish (salmon) too.
comment in response to post
Genuine question: are there any communities (towns, villages etc) that rely on fishing anymore? Obvs it is bad for the people that fish if thry can't do that, and there will be some down stream job losses eg net repair etc but is catching fish a major employer in any community these days?

Having just had both parents in two different hospitals with a badly broken leg and a stroke, I can confirm our hospitals are full of foreigners from Idnaia, Africa, Europe and Asia. All of them providing the care for the overwhelmingly white and mostly elderly patients.
comment in response to post
I have been cutting them slack up until today. Canceled membership and sent a stinking email (not that they'll care) Unless thi gs change they're going to squander their majority and be the one term government that led to a Reform government of all the talentless.

Your Trump tariff is your house number plus your age minus the number of pets you have ever had. Unless it's Thursday.

Properly pissed off. If I'd wanted this sort of bollocks I'd have voted Conservative/Reform. Why try and fight reform on the ground of their choosing? You can't beat them on immigration - they will alway be able to go nastier. To beat Reform he should be making immigration an irrelevant issue.

As someone unlucky enough to have both parents in (different) hospitals at the moment I can say that if you meet a foreigner in a hospital they will almost certainly be working there looking after the mostly elderly white patients.

...whilst on the subject of deals.... Can you comment on the "exempt from national insurance" bit of the UK/India deal? Farage et al are making hay but my understanding is it's nowhere near what they imply and not uncommon in deals Is it substantially different from other deals?
comment in response to post
The real test will be if the the UK actually gave up anything of consequence and if the new position is any better than the old position. If we have given anything major up just to return to the previous position it smacks of a shakedown.

As a non-lawyer can I ask about citing cases? Is there not a ckntral or at least official register of all cases? Or at least the ones from the last century or so? Or is it always taken on trust when a lawyer says "as per X v Y" that the case exists and their interpretation is correct?
comment in response to post
Whilst it is a gift to Farage, it appears to be the same agreement we had with the EU and US plus it also appears to only apply to Indian workers over here working for Indian companies So not Indians hired by British companies but if an Indian company sets up here, it applies to it's staff it sends
comment in response to post
I doubt it. People base their view on headlines and how many immigrants they come across. Headlines won't change as long as the media give Farage a free pass. And even if you cut migration to zero all the ones already here *will still be here* working in care homes, hospitals, hotels etc
comment in response to post
Number of immigration headlines. That's what it is.

Clearly they screened "The Rock" in the White House cinema last night.

My theory is it was "movie night" at the White House last night and they watched "The Rock".

Set number of seats with lords serving fixed terms (say 12y). Every year some are appointed by Gov to replace outgoing. Can only be appointed from a shortlist published by parties *before* elections All ballots secret to avoid whips/paety pressure

Or maybe imposing regulations on TV ads for bad foods?

There is no incentive to give anything up to sign a deal with an unreliable party, but there may be incentive to sign a deal that gets you things whilst giving up nothing.

I think it is more that the consequences of the economic effects at a national level (lower gdp, lower tax take etc leading to cuts in services and benefits) tend to hit working classes harder (if you define as lower income) Some of this depends on how you even define working class anymore...

There is a credible argument that one of the reasons the US security apparatus missed the danger of Bin Laden and subsequently WTC attacks is because thry were composed of white Christian ivy league men who didn't understand how OBL would resonate with the Muslim world and so discounted the threat.
comment in response to post
True but it doesn't need to work every time. Ifnit onky works this time it will have done it's job. Plus the thing Trump gets doesn't necessarily need to be a thing that is good for the US or the West. Just something shiny he can boast about - maybe a giant tower in Moscow, who knows.

It's that Putin knows how to play Trump like a fiddle. All he has to do is stroke his ego, which is easy as Trump admires Putin as a strongman leader. Putin just has to say "you know I have always admired you... you are so masculine, so handsome, so willing to agree Crimea is Russian, so virile" 🪄
