We hope this work helps anyone willing to start working on these languages and with their communities. Thanks to my co-authors, Fernando Carranza and Viviana Cotik for their dedication. And also to @antonisa.bsky.social for his support.

We also reviewed the available corpora and research on these language families, identifying two main types of contributions: by Latin American individuals in the diaspora and by local projects with institutional support. Most of the work was published through dedicated academic community initiatives

We argued the questionnaire design under estimates the real number of speakers. The known narrative of European descent as part of Argentinian identity might influence individuals to not identify as indigenous while being speakers of an indigenous language.

We analyzed the most spoken indigenous language families, using the demo linguistic data provided by the census. 🗣️
However, individuals were asked if they were speakers only if they self-identified as indigenous first. No questions were done about the languages they spoke nor their proficiency.

According to the last census, conducted both virtually and in-person for the very 1st time, more than 25 languages previously thought to be extinct still have speakers. 🗣️
