Non-science related thought after the holidays: one of the best gifts I've ever received? A nice ratcheting screwdriver. Truly nothing as nice as the way it smoothly clicks, and makes tasks so much more satisfying.

Think carefully before buying a Greenland shark for the holidays. They are, after all, the world’s longest-living vertebrate.

Maybe one of the most dishonest pieces I’ve read in years: laundering your company’s reputation for killing tens of thousands of people with denials through the life story of a slain employee. Maybe take some responsibility for the societal harms and people you kill. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/o...

The life of each of us began when a sperm and an egg came together. But what happens at a molecular level? Our latest work in Cell led by @vdeneke.bsky.social & Andreas Blaha reveals a conserved fertilization complex that bridges sperm and egg in vertebrates! (1/11) www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

I don't think it should be a controversial opinion that batshit crazy persons should not be in charge of the health of hundreds of millions of people, including millions of young and unborn kids, who don't have the luxury of you learning from your mistakes. Also, see Samoa and the measles vaccine.

We thank the reviewers for their suggestions and believe they have substantially improved the paper

This is a good news! Good that HHMI recognizes talent is spread out rather than in some elite universities @hhmi.bsky.social www.thetransmitter.org/funding/howa...

Delighted to see @hhmi.bsky.social take this important step with the investigator program. I hope that this will lead to a broader array of voices in science, and a broader, more inclusive number of institutions with the amazing resources provided by HHMI www.thetransmitter.org/funding/howa...

Paper accepted today! Congrats @bengarcia-danio.bsky.social on your next first author publication! Can't wait to see the next one from your PhD!

Great to see the tree of life being corrected, showing the proper place for zebras. After all, aren’t we all fish, at least monophyletically?

Go red: « The mScarlet family of fluorescent proteins keeps growing! Meet mScarlet3-H (aka mYongHong), an ultrastable RFP ideal for many advanced microscopy applications. Plasmids are now available via WeKwikGene! wekwikgene.wllsb.edu.cn/plasmids?sea... »

Reintroducing the lab by featuring some recent papers on acoustic communication in the tiny glassfish Danionella cerebrum (@danionella.bsky.social). Antonia Groneberg carefully characterized the ontogeny of their singing in JEB: doi.org/10.1242/jeb.... 🧵

It’s been 3:50 for quite a while now 🤔

There are “talented” scientists everywhere. It’s the resource hoarding at large institutions that is the real problem.

Everyone should check out @immunojordan.bsky.social who just joined, and incredible scientist doing super cool marsupial immunology!

Yo, listen up here's a story About a little guy That lives in a blue world And all day and all night And everything he sees is just blue Like him inside and outside A bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) for #SundayFishSketch

An amazing talk from a great scientist!

Excited for my first bluesky post announcing TWO openings for tenure track positions in virology! I am chair of the search committee and with a new department head Mike Gale we are in an exciting building phase. Please share with anyone who might be interested: hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/ext/365...

As a proud comparative/non-model immunologist working in trout, lungfish, and zebrafish, and friends working on opossums, skinks, and sharks, reach out! We’re always looking for more folks to collaborate with, and trust me, it only gets cooler the deeper you go!

Now more than ever the world should learn about the life and impact of @stanfordmedicine.bsky.social neuroscientist Ben Barres, the movie is underway! @atqmovie.bsky.social

I created a simple flow chart to help my lab trainees choose the most appropriate stats test in Prism (*for single-factor comparisons only). Feel free to share with your group if you think it could be helpful first start.

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Microbiome Sciences. Apply by December 11th at: recruit.ucdavis.edu/JPF06847

We need post docs, students, and faculty in Congress, communicating what scientists do from scientists, unfiltered

Just watched the full House hearing & testimony of NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertignolli. A few takeaways: • the proposed budget, in addition to not increasing for inflation, wants to condense NIH from 27 to 15 institutes. The NIH does not think this is a good idea. 🧵1/?

Gut IgA1 and IgA2 subclasses co-emerge early in life, largely derive from clonally related and somatically mutated plasma cells in adults, and show unique changes of both frequency and reactivity in IBD @gmagrilab.bsky.social doi.org/10.1084/jem....

US based organisation (but presumably open to anyone anywhere in STEM 🧪). "Mentors do not need to be disabled, but willing to learn about the disability community and empower disabled individuals."

I think I’m finally caught up adding individuals to the #DisabledInSTEM Starter Pack!! If I missed you, please reach out! 💜

Just swam over to Bluesky and decided to dip my fin in the water. I am a Postdoc in the Weinstein lab and currently on the faculty job market. I developed an injury system to study cutaneous wound healing in adult zebrafish. Check out my movie showing neutrophil recruitment after injury.

Are you an #ECR who would like to attend a #microscopy or #bioimageanalysis training course in the next ~6 months but don't have sufficient funding, check to see if you are eligible for our JCS-FocalPlane Training Grant. Next deadline: 22 November 2024 www.biologists.com/grants/jcs-f...

Hope I'm the first to post this all time classic on this platform

Top science bluesky topics to date: 1. How about them impact factors? 2. Elsevier should stop existing... right? 3. Science
