Bit late to this, but here’s my thoughts on Mission driven Government, and how we can get there when we are not structured around services. www.cathydutton.co.uk/posts/missio...

Now hosted at 18F.org, the archive of guides and resources! 18f.org/guides/ De-risking procurement, design methods, accessibility, agile, and more…

Picard management tip: Give your crew the best technology available and you'll be amazed what they can do for your enterprise.

Tried to gather some thoughts about the “deletion” of 18F. Bottom line: None of this is about efficiency. We’ve known it for weeks and it’s plain as day. They’re simply removing any barrier to privatization, oligopoly, and plutocracy. hillary.medium.com/deleting-18f...

More important than ever, taking some time to disconnect from the rest of the world for a few hours #UKLakeDistrict

From todays Times - but surely the unspoken part of this is that ‘the 8am phone scramble’ to get a GP appointment is a way that actually helps GPs limit or have have some control over current unmeetable levels of demand they face every day

Today's NHS story... I've been waiting 4 months for an important ENT consultation, only to get a phone call 10 minutes before it was due to start to say no one had realised the consultant was on leave today. Some poor person is now having to cancel a full afternoon of appointments!

One of my favourite type of work days, in person, working with smart people on some tricky service and design strategy challenges. Also, in one of my favourite places to visit (answer in the alt text if you don’t know)

I’ve quietly been getting on with writing on my blog more regularly this year. No fanfare, just writing for the sake of thinking and learning - lots of being willing to share first drafts and early thoughts in the open again

I love this but hope they release it on vinyl as an artefact I can use in class/art statement…

A new blog post for a new week. I’ve shared some thoughts about AI content summaries and the importance of understanding context #contentdesign benholliday.com/2025/02/24/a...

Google, Microsoft, and Meta's increasing use of data centers has resulted in increased air pollution from extensive fossil fuel energy consumption and associated public health costs related to treating cancers, asthma, and other similar issues, valued at over $5.4 billion in the past five years.

I needed this today. We’re finally getting some better weather in the Lakes #breathe

Three interesting pieces on the consequences of datafication in the Guardian today. On what we do and don't learn from the quantified self www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

If you want a timeline cleanse, check out this gene therapy cure for a rare form of childhood blindness, brought to you by the @ucleye.bsky.social lab I spent a decade with! www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

I curate a monthly newsletter about AI - here’s February’s 👇🏻 aixinsights.substack.com/p/february-r...

Really enjoyed this post - the importance of white space in design - including organisations

I’ve been following DOGE with a real sense of shock from the UK. This is a good article - how understanding the relationship between policy, modern services and technology is crucial, and what is technology a means to? www.techpolicy.press/doge-underst...

Remember, people are disabled by bad assumptions, design, code, architecture, content, processes, policies, go governance, attitudes and biases, to name a few. So before you say accessibility is done FOR disabilities, recognise it’s our decisions that disable our users.

It tells you something about digital maturity when a service regularly sends reminder emails/texts that say something like “Our apologies if you’ve already booked / had your appointment. Please ignore this message.”

In my 35 years in #mentalhealth poor #housing or a lack of has always been the thing that causes significant and enduring harm. Supported accommodation that is safe and close to one’s community is too hard to find. This is an important piece of research 👇🏼 www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Wrestled my thoughts on AI into some form of cogent shape and here they are. What have I missed? Am I being naive or just sceptical enough? Would love your feedback. neilojwilliams.net/my-position-...

Imagine a revolutionary method of transport which offers so many benefits but where the appropriate level of safety and vehicle maintenance is decided by Californian tech investors who are seeking rapid financial growth. Let’s talk about Lime in London! www.londoncentric.media/p/lime-ebike...

Praised, then razed: why is UK’s best building of 1996 being demolished?

The "messy middle" of change: gap in the change process between intent/ambition & the ability of a system/org/team to make progress. Without methods to motivate people to work towards something new, we may never get past it. benholliday.com/2025/01/28/t... @benholliday.com. Graphics:Tash Willcocks

It always pays to check your sources …https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2j15r1g09o

“Elon Musk admitted to his biographer that the reason the Hyperloop was announced—even though he had no intention of pursuing it—was to try to disrupt the California high-speed rail project to get in the way of that actually succeeding.” — @parismarx.com in @gizmodo.com

Less about living in office, but recognising how many people working in London spend nights in Premier Inns or similar hotels every week while living in other parts of the country - I’ve always felt there’s got to be a better alternative to this

👏 “After one year of the zone, nitrogen dioxide from traffic was lower, GP visits for respiratory illnesses were down by 25% and those for heart problems decreased by 24%”

In other news, really pleased to be confirmed to speak at UX Scotland this summer in Edinburgh - I last spoke at the very first of these conferences back in 2013 uxscotland.net/2025-speakers
