What could House Republicans’ $880B in potential Medicaid cuts mean for your congressional district? On average, we estimate a $2B funding loss per district and substantial reductions in coverage in states that expanded Medicaid. ⬇️ www.americanprogress.org/article/the-...

Suggestions for a three-pronged strategy against autocracy and sabotage of the state itself: Congress, courts, streets.

A former Soviet spy says that Trump was indeed recruited to the KGB 38 years ago by his department. He was given a codename, 'Krasnov'. We checked, and the source was indeed a KBG intelligence officer at the time. Read about it in my @bylinetimes.bsky.social report: bylinetimes.com/2025/02/21/d...

This is not an intellectual point, bur I wanted to state that I am frightened by the situation in the US and I am becoming even more anxious by the extent to which most people I know IRL (ie: not politics addicts) are entirely unmoved

🚨 BREAKING: The U.S. is violating Article 3 of the Budapest Memorandum by pressuring Ukraine to hand over 50% of its rare earth minerals in exchange for past aid.

If they prioritized 'gold-standard research on the root causes of why Americans are getting sick' then they'd identify social and environmental determinants of ill-health. Such as capitalism, pollution, and ecosystem destruction. They'd advocate social medicine and planetary health! #STS #anthro

With Trump 2.0, everything has changed. We're not living in the same world. And every part of our way of life is under threat. @gregggonsalves.bsky.social is one of the few scientific professionals who is responding to this reality. The rest of us need to wake up and find ways to resist. Fast.

As I see my colleagues at risk of job loss in the US government, I have been on the phone with people in tears over many concerns I won’t get into on this platform. I am doing my best for them behind the scenes. However, I will recall a passage from William M. Wheeler in 1970. #science #entomology

Just a reminder that the models are already had incredibly problematic behavior before this, including pushing forward racist medical tropes. See our paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The irony of the richest man in the world almost single-handedly destroying an agency designed to help the world’s poor, so that the U.S. federal budget has more room for another giant tax cut for the richest man in the world and his pals, should not be lost on anyone. [Cartoon by Mike Luckovich]

PSA: While the StatCan web interface is down today, the WDS API is still fully functional. The {cansim} R package makes it super-easy to access data from the API, complete with metadata. And it facilitates programmatic data discovery to find the tables and data you need.

I present to you all the notice that now is displayed on the CDC HIV prevention page. Again - In these times, find a healthcare provider you trust, who follows evidence based practice grounded in science. Follow trusted sources of information.

I am probably on some government lists now but at least I am in good company.

I was honoured to give a lecture for @healthfoundation.bsky.social today on the theme of AI & health. I dedicated the lecture to the memory of Simon Burall - a pioneer in the field of public engagement who sadly died last year. Short blog on the lecture themes here www.health.org.uk/features-and...

This has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding (and sobering) collaborations I have been involved in, especially the integration of advanced stat methods and deep substantive expertise. Crucial empirical data and results that we hope can inform policy discussions.

Does anyone else see Trump’s desire to colonise Canada and Greenland as confirmation of his belief in climate change.

I don't think people realize that most of the people who work on research grants--not necessarily the faculty but all the RAs and what not--are contingent. They're not permanent employees of the research foundation, if the grant runs out they're automatically out of a job

We – Mahmoud and Ahmad's friends and colleagues in the UK – are in touch with the family. We have no further news. This is an entirely inexcusable and illegitimate act

Musk reportedly spent $40M on #Superbowl ads calling #USAID wasteful. Here’s how we would’ve spent that $$: 🏈Purchased HIV treatment from U.S. pharma companies to keep 1M pp alive for 1 year. Tell Congress to youtu.be/PqUESHfuO_8 #saveforeignaid and #standwithUSAID

I'm not sure how to explain how financially devastating this will be for universities. This is, literally, catastrophic for universities and for science in the United States.

Why do ethnic minorities in the UK live in households that spend so much more income on housing than White British adults? Turns out the answer is complex. Our latest report, released today, dives into the root causes. Let’s explore the key insights👇🏾

The damage is permanent. People were already suspicious of US efforts in many of these areas, the lost of trust caused by these actions will live on for generations bsky.app/profile/agaw...

Anything akin to this and next election we'd have a coalition government, then a straight up reform government after that. And for all I know Reform will get higher still before 2028. Will any poll result be shocking enough for Labour to abandon the try to appease the Mail editorial staff strategy?

News! The public health grant has today received its first significant real-terms increase after a decade of neglect, something we - and others - have long been calling for. But it's still 26% down on 2015/16. More analysis once allocations published later.👀 www.health.org.uk/press-office...

I could save you a fortune - stop wasting money buying companies and contractors to deliver poorly specified services with no plan for handover or upskilling, let civil servants who know what they are doing build and maintain this stuff themselves, guaranteed to be cheaper!
