Have you tried When We Were Orphans? It feels like the same approach - genre tropes and images are revisited in a tired, nostalgic, slightly confused way, but the effect isn't exactly parody, more a sense that the genre is as frail and mortal as we are and an allegory of our frailty in a weird way.

I just think she's been really offended by his apparent condescension, to the point where she doesn't realise she's agreeing with him (if people think it's fantasy they're reading it wrong and its actual effects will seem tinny).
