But bravery is contagious. There are people who think "maybe I should do something" who will look left and will look right, and if they don't see people doing things, they'll sit back down. Make sure that they see people doing things.

In the last three weeks, there has been movement. People have been standing up, and not just us little guys at protests. The Supreme Court has issued orders against the executive; institutions are beginning to push back. It's not enough yet. It's nothing like enough.

Our culture teaches us that we can dominate, dismiss, and destroy anything and anyone that unsettles us or defies us. Yet, we all go to sleep each night and surrender control and have no idea what images & stories our bodies and psyches will subject us to. We can't even dominate ourselves.

The sad thing is, while they are reading theory, the much-despised wine moms are packing lunches and first aid kits, setting up transportation, making sure everyone has comfy shoes, checking the phone tree, and actually showing up. I know who I want on my team.

Solidarity!! We got to drive through the Clackamas protest and wave and honk, and that helped 🧡 Then I watched story after story from friends and strangers and I felt so encouraged!

My advice (hard-earned from the trenches of growing up evangelical) is that capitulation, fawning, and silence will not save you from the pain. The only thing that stops an abusive authority figure is for people to stand up to them.

"One wishes that white Americans would read [history], for their own sakes & stop defending themselves against it...people who imagine that history flatters them...are impaled on their history like a butterfly on a pin and become incapable of seeing or changing themselves, or the world." -J. Baldwin

A lot of people have mentioned to me a long wait for this book at their library. If you have Spotify pro, you can listen to the audiobook immediately for free open.spotify.com/show/279JRLP...
