'Motorbike' released for PS3 on this day in 2013. An unoptimized conversion of a years-old mobile game, sold on the PlayStation Store for $14.99. Critics would quickly point out the egregious business model, as well as the fact that the game is barely functional.

'Hour of Victory' released on this day in 2007. The tail end of the WWII shooter fad brought about this middling title, which under-serves in its novelty of providing three ostensibly "distinct" playable characters. Holds a dubious distinction as GameSpot's "Worst Game of 2007."

'Ride to Hell: Retribution' released on this day in 2013. A half-finished romp through late '60s America, through the eyes of a never-nude biker. One of the most negatively-received titles of the 2010s, though I would contend that it has a compelling charm and earnestness to it.

'Lula 3D' released on this day in 2005. The evolution of a long-running adult game franchise into the third dimension. Hideous visuals detract from any possible eroticism, and poor grasp over design and technicals drags down all the rest on offer.

Our newest episode of "Bad Game Chance Time" is up now on YouTube! Come for the gorilla gibs, stay to see a bootleg NES game absolutely annihilate all of its competition for the night. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXTj...

'DRIV3R' released on this day in 2004. The third entry in the Driver series drove consumers mad on release; with its boasting a litany of bugs and half-baked content, due to Atari's insistence on beating 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' to market.

'Mighty No. 9' released on this day in 2016. The intended spiritual successor to the Megaman series [by way of former developer Keiji Inafune] would come to be regarded as one of the most disappointing games in the history of crowdfunding. Delays and undelivered promises abound.

'Umbrella Corps' released on this day in 2016. Capcom's 2nd attempt to position Resident Evil as a squad shooter (following 'Operation Raccoon City'). Bland, weightless gameplay soon gave way to a rapid decline in players, and quickly to the death of the multiplayer component.

'Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness' released on this day in 2003. Long-delayed and heavily cut down; The Angel of Darkness marked Lara Croft's heavily criticized PS2 debut, and resulted in the cancellation of a planned trilogy of titles. Highly ambitious, but largely busted.

'Alone in the Dark' released on this day in 2008. This reboot of the classic survival horror franchise took it in the direction of bombastic action set pieces and a fixation on fire. The rest of the game suffers from wonky physics, obtuse control, and ill-conceived puzzling.

Our "Happy Charkie-Streamiversa-Bag-Day" special is up now on YouTube! Come for the fun assortment of fighting games, stay to watch Cass get sappy about two of their favorite people. youtu.be/oCdoNiUskKg

'Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor' released on this day in 2012. FromSoft's attempt to re-envision the Steel Battalion franchise sans elaborate cockpit peripheral, but instead with the power of Kinect. The end result is no less than a disaster due to unresponsive motion controls.

The second episode of our 'Contra: Rogue Corps' playthrough is up now on YouTube! Come see egregious content recycling at its worst. Or, if you prefer to be optimistic: Come see economic game design at its best. youtu.be/Fu9JSb8kYbM

'Seifuku Densetsu: Pretty Fighter X' released on this day in 1996. A conversion / update of an SNES fighting game for the Saturn. Eviscerated by Japanese game critics for its poor hit detection and punishing AI, as well as its "old-fashioned" controls (such as lacking dashing).

Reposting this episode for the weekend crowd, because we're pretty well pleased with how it came out. Might even serve as a good beginner's course on how to play mahjong, if you're real hard up for one! (Shouts to @deviousvacuum.bsky.social for their expertise and guiding hands.)

Thanks for the interview @benstarr.bsky.social!

'Alone in the Dark: Illumination' released on this day in 2015. The late follow-up to a beloathed 2008 franchise reboot. A last-ditch, half-baked effort to remodel the series after 'Left 4 Dead,' marred by its blatantly unfinished state and repetitive gameplay loop.

The first episode of our 'Contra: Rogue Corps' playthrough is up now on YouTube! Tune in for Evan Dorkin's finest hour as a writer, with masterful soliloquies and layered narrative for days. Haha, just kidding: Dudes just say "fuck" over and over again. youtu.be/cRTg6nLDT2E

'Duke Nukem Forever' released on this day in 2011. The end result of fourteen years of mismanaged development was a predictable failure; between unappealing visuals, groanworthy attempts at humor, and gameplay torn between different decades of design convention.

'Spirit of Speed 1937' released (for Dreamcast) on this day in 2000. An attempt to digitally revive vintage race vehicles called for the revival of LJN as a publishing label [by its rights-holders Acclaim]. Needless to say, both plans sputtered out in spectacular fashion.

The twelfth episode of our "Kursed Kart Racer" series is up now on YouTube! Watch as an open source Linux game eats the lunch of Butt-Ugly™ licensed slop. Also: Zeebo. youtu.be/qvCHjmLVyys

The second episode of "Johnny Bag's Not-So-Pro Skater" is up now on YouTube! Come for the K-pop, stay for the sick shreds. youtu.be/arDTmpYvYTw

The second [and final] episode of our 'Highlander: The Last of the MacLeods' playthrough is up now on YouTube! Bear witness to our descent into digital madness!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIx...

'Guardians of the 'Hood' released on this day in 1992. Atari's attempt to re-implement 'Pit-Fighter's tech into an arcade beat 'em up title. Mired by many the same flaws as its predecessor, it failed to compete with genre contemporaries, and never received a home conversion.

'Athena' (for NES) released on this day in 1987. Micronics' attempt to translate SNK's arcade side-scroller to the NES manages to retain its novel gear-up mechanics, but at a great cost: Sluggish performance, janky collision detection, and utterly broken boss encounters.

Our playthrough of 'Resident Evil Gaiden' is up now on YouTube! Watch as a conceptually neat handheld survival horror is squandered away in real time by wretched progression and unclear objectives. (Also: Barry Burton threatens to shoot a child dead.) youtu.be/cdCnRF8sLbc

Happy to have done my part in unearthing the stories behind one and a half games on this list. (Shouts to Rebecca Ann Heineman and Megumi-tan.) And yes: Trans folk have always been here in this games biz, and we always will be. Take that with you this Pride Month.

'Battle Monsters' released on this day in 1995. A Saturn fighter featuring a cast of monstrous digitized characters, made to battle each other in sprite-scaling multi-tier arenas. Slammed on release mostly for reasons of poor presentation and lacking control.

Our "Games From a Hat" episode covering GameCube oddities is up now on YouTube! We can only hope we've done Shamu proud with this one... www.youtube.com/watch?v=LahR...

'Advent Rising' released on this day in 2005. Planned from its conception as a sci-fi trilogy (complete with collaboration by writer / homophobe Orson Scott Card), Majesco would wager their futures as a console publisher on the franchise's success. Needless to say: It bombed.

'D-Xhird' released on this day in 1997. From the creators of 'Battle Arena Toshinden' came this undercooked 3D fighter on Saturn. Infamously reviewed as "the worst fighter I have ever played" by GameSpot's Ryan MacDonald. I wouldn't go 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 far, but it's a clunker alright.
