It's been slow for me too; but I think this is just server strain and not anything to do with the new design. I will be monitoring the situation and if it continues, raising it with our tech support.

We apologise for the inconvenience, but the software underlying the old version of BHO had reached end-of-life, so we had to turn it off.
We are working as hard as we can with limited resources to fix search and subscriptions, but it is taking much longer, and is more difficult, then envisaged.

It's not impatience, it's core functionality. But it's also difficult to implement - there's all sorts of stuff going on behind that simple search box.
It is a priority, and we are working on it.

In the meantime, please try using google's site specific searh:

We can't turn the archived site back on, as it is running outdated and insecure software. That's why we had to go ahead with the upgrade.
We're aware of the problems with search, and it is a priority to fix, but it is also more difficult to fix than we thought, so it is taking some time.

We found a problem with search, and are re-indexing everything. That explains the catalogue slowly expanding. Should be completed soonish.

What's the error message? Are you using www.british-history.ac.uk rather than archive.british-history ?
