The problem is subpar hardware, there is a NFC standard but a lot of vendors don’t comply with it.
It also why tapping your phone on Bart can be so frustrating, it’s not the phone, it’s the reader.

They are slower, I complained about it to BART on Twitter and they responded that it will be fixed with “AI” and I almost had a stroke
