Oh yeah! That works also. I played Nde2, which has the same effect. Didn’t notice f5 was an option also.

Yes, but it has to be the right one!

Classic pattern, Rh8+ Kxh8 Qh5+ Kg8 Qh7+ Kf8 Qh8++

Re4 then Nd3++

That when I sign into Lichess anonymously and play random people. And no need to care about the rating.

I do standard-easy puzzles, so I get about 75% right. Minimum 5 a day, frequently more when I have time. Average about 4 minutes per puzzle. Have seen benefits in my play, especially slower time controls like the 45/45 league.

Nice one. Kf6 followed by h5++

Discovered attack!

I've seen people say that 5 hard puzzles a day, and 1 rapid game followed by analysis, is a good floor.

gxf5 Qh6 seems really bad. Threatening Qxh7+ followed by Qxh8+, or taking the B on e6 if you move the N to allow the R to protect h7. If you start moving the K f8-e8 then Bh5 attacking the pinned R on f7 might not be fun. Didn't fully calculate all the lines but that pawn looks like poison.

Rh1+ Nxh1 Bh2+ Kxh2 Rh8+ Kg3 Nf6+ Kf4 (or Kf3) Rh4++

That looks right, except after Rh8+ Ke7 I think Bxc5+ Kd7 Rxd8. I actually didn't get that far in my calculation, good job!

Wow, that's great! Keep it up!

OMG that's totally crazy. And very tempting...

It's not uncommon for postings to occur an hour or more before the next round, or for the next day. I've been able to do a little research a few times to at least see what my opponent might play.

A number of the kids in our club play there, and have titles like ACM, AFM, I think one is even higher than that. The big drawback for me is I think your future OTB opponents can see your games online and prep against you.

Good write up!

Seems really easy. Of course I've been looking at forcing moves a lot more since that 2nd lesson with you!

Yes, some of my "cleanest" games have come in the Caro Kann, especially if there are a lot of early trades (so the position is not that complicated). It's all I play against e4, so I play it against lower rated players, but I can frequently win even endgames against them.

I play mostly on Lichess but also blitz games on chessdotcom, but think the UI on Lichess is far superior. Just use chessdotcom for a burner account, that's where I play when I'm just relaxing or having a beer and don't want to mess up my rating.

Shows the value of calculating forcing lines. And can be done quickly with only one legal move for the opponent.

I don't have much time, but it seems pretty straightforward - Rad5, black has one move only. Kf3. Then it seems like either rook can move to the e file, and again black has one legal move - Kxf2. Then the rook on the d file moves to the f file, mate. Unusual for a puzzle to have 2 solutions.

I've only used the mobile version, but it is awesome. I've heard the Windows version is buggy and crashes a lot?

Interesting, never heard of Chechen wood. Had to look it up.

I do half an hour on an elliptical machine 5 days a week, and train chess puzzles during that time. Works quite well!
comment in response to post
Nice! I've done so many puzzles like that but don't think I ever got it in a game.

Hi, I'm in Guam (UTC +10). Jebotto on LiChess. Play slow games in the Lichess 4545 league, although it can be challenging to schedule games with the US and Europe. Frequently play at 0700 local on Sunday mornings. Also have a house in Laguna, spend a few weeks there a year.

Haha I actually thought I better have a bad game soon or it's going to look suspicious!

This was mostly opening knowledge and experience, have played this line or others very similar to it many times. The f pawn push can be crushing with no pieces left that can defend the Kingside. 17...Qh4? gave me a rook lift with tempo which made the end come that much quicker.

How do you like the manual? I bought it, seems like a great idea, but have only skimmed a few pages so far.
comment in response to post
Got it, thanks. I do that sometimes also, move by move with the engine on.
comment in response to post
What do you mean by not using Lichess' review? Not using the analyze game function (with Stockfish) on the website? Meaning you're using an engine on your computer or something like that? Curious what the distinction is.

1... b3 2. Kxb3 Kd5 3. Kc3 Ke4 4. Kd2 Kf3 5. e4 Kxe4 gives white the opposition. Sure looked like a w for black until I saw e4. Draw? That's a good one. (deleted first post which had the notation wrong, as if I was white instead of back)
