There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

Look at this gaming-ass PC under the desk. I'm sure that machine has been secured before connecting to govt networks.

Weather forecasts have become much more accurate. A four-day forecast today is as accurate as a one-day forecast 30 years ago.

Your map’s legend can be turned into a histogram, helping your audience understand the distribution in addition to decoding the colours.

Great use of ggplot and the geomtextpath package. Also, ya know, interesting data.

Don't post AI slop. And if you repost by mistake, as I've done, delete it. When you have something to say and attach AI art, you're undercutting your message and hurting artists. Pay or barter for art. There's a reason good things cost money and take time. AI art is harmful and it looks like ass.

we should probably teach kids to code more just to demystify this shit. like it’s not easy, but it’s very learnable. letting people think Being Good At Computer makes you a genius polymath has been such a disaster.

Fellow NSA - National Security Agency veterans. Look at what’s happened at the National Cryptologic Museum. They covered up with brown paper the photos of Women in American Cryptology. All in response to President Trump’s anti-diversity executive order.

Very cool that the Trump admin has reawakened the fears of dying in a horrific plane crash. Haven’t even thought twice about that since I was ~6 years old. Back on the table, baby! Also if my body is exploded at 600 miles per hour it'll be blamed on the last remaining non-white federal worker. 👍

tired? need a boost? cold out? drink an entire hyrdoflask of coffee. the whole bottle, nice and warm, just drink it up. you will certainly not regret drinking an entire hydroflask of coffee.

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

I’m sorry, this might be a great investigation, but “as it was never intended” is obscene. This is precisely how many people specifically and repeatedly told us — warned us — it would be used.

This is 100% me. I re-read it as an adult hoping for some nostalgia and was like "oh shit, this sucks actually". Every scene is sort of a thinly veiled self-insert of Asimov talking about how brilliant he is.

Lovely example of how weird real-world data is. I put all 55 million points in Overture maps into a Nomic Atlas map. Lots of points spuriously appearing in the ocean. But the 1° square around 'null island' (0° lat, 0° long) is suspiciously clear -- someone has cleared out bad data just there.

project 1: Map Designer, a #dataviz tool and @figma.com plug in that simplifies the process creating and customizing maps in Figma! Had a lot of fun learning how to translate d3-geo's svg paths into Figma's vector networks. try it out and let me know what you think! www.figma.com/community/pl...

Some good discussion here. In general, I think this is a larger part of a risk discussion. What is the cost of patching vs the cost of not patching. Both sides of that equation are hard to measure. Even enumerating the scenarios before you need their magnitude and probability is hard.

My 'I'm going to stop drinking just as soon as I'm Secretary of Defense' shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.

A sneak peek: the DuckDB CLI client's new nightly build now pretty-prints large numbers by default.

Write math on 🦋 with UnicodeIt! For example: θ ∈ ℝⁿ or pp̅ → μ⁺μ⁻ Use website or install system-wide in Linux, macOS, or windows www.unicodeit.net (Created several years ago with @svenkreiss.bsky.social)

I think alphabetical is the way to go here. The goal is to show the effect of the vaccine, which isn't affected by the order (the change is pretty uniform though, maybe slightly slower in western states). When folks interact they want to find their state. Sorting by region makes that harder.

Finally some good shit happening.

A favorite of mine is this one showing cumulative new vulnerabilities year over year. Shows how the current year is out pacing others. This was used to diagnose a couple of data changes and errors in several years. Made by Jay Jacobs of EPSS fame.

new map of every account on BlueSky just dropped :) aurora.ndimensional.xyz

Great visualization.
