In a festival full of eyebrow-raising loglines, SLANTED pushes the envelope furthest. I spoke with its debut writer-director Amy Wang about the tonal and racial shifts her film undergoes #SXSW2025 screenanarchy.com/2025/03/sxsw...

In France, you can buy an economy size bag of sugar-coated Smurfs in the supermarket. Until now, I never had a reason to contemplate the philosophical question of what I would do if I had a whole bag of Smurfs.

not sure I should be doing this, too demanding, tricky, and slippery...but anyway: Documentary ethics, informed consent, and journalism vs documentary: The Black Box Diaries “case” asian-docs.com/2025/03/10/d...

"People think that [Hong Sangsoo is] always doing the same movie, but he’s constantly changing. Of course, not in a psychotic way. It’s not that now he’ll do the complete opposite. There’s a sort of working program, thinking and rethinking." Matías Piñeiro talks with @blakethinks.bsky.social:

It's interesting that two of the harshest critiques of ItĹŤ Shiori's approach in her Black Box Diaries come from two female documentary filmmakers, Mikami Chie and Yang Yonghi... I really should write a post indexing all the articles written on the subject...

A film I went on about a fair bit when it came out, which I think is really special but which nobody bloody watched because you're all idiots (/it got a tiny cinema release) has landed on BBC iPlayer. Watch GODLAND! Phone off, full attention please. Thank me later

SLOW WEST director John Maclean is finally back with TORNADO! KĂ´ki, Tim Roth and Jack Lowden deliver strong performances in a thriller that I wish lived up to the promise of its terrific first act. I'm sure New York friends already know about Subway Cinema's Sundays on Fire, but I think they should turn out for this one specifically. Just saying...

It’s been 20 years since I last saw Maggie Cheung and I’m glad she’s finally back, even if this sequel seems to have taken a strange turn.

advice to young writers: - begin the first sentence of every paragraph with, "So basically the whole deal is, is that [...]" - begin subsequent sentences with, "And plus, [...]" - end every paragraph with, "So that basically wraps it up as far as all that goes." - 4 blank lines between paragraphs

Thrilled to share my wonderful interview with none other than The People's Joker, Vera Drew, in which we caught up a whole two and a half years after that very first screening at TIFF. Shout out to Little White Lies for bringing me in for this one AND Jake Alexander for that perfect header art.

Once a Roman Porno director, now a director of period romance, Negishi Kichitaro is a fascinating figure. I sat down with him at IFFR, where we discussed the problematic elements in pink cinema, his decade-long hiatus, and Taisho-set screenwriting screenanarchy.com/2025/02/rott...

I spoke with Lois Patiño for @cineuropa.bsky.social about his IFFR stand-out ARIEL, interpolating Shakespeare's texts, his interest in spectator experience, and this metatextual moment in the Argentine film space cineuropa.org/en/interview...

Sad to report that Kurodahan appears to be closing up shop. This press has been an incredible resource for the kinds of Japanese stories unlikely to get translated and published elsewhere—especially, but not exclusively, SF and horror. Take a look at their backlist soon! I've just stocked up.

In a sociopolitical climate increasingly intent on sidelining and disavowing empathy at every turn, it’s comforting to know that we are not immune to movies. My reflections on 2024 in cinema for @thefilmstage.bsky.social thefilmstage.com/blake-simons... :

They're showing a series of Taiwanese and Hong Kong avant-garde shorts from the '60s made by the likes of Chang Chao-tang, Law Kar, and Chiu Kang-chien next Sunday at the Close-Up Cinema in London. Very hard to see stuff that's the precursor to both the Taiwan New Cinema and the Hong Kong New Wave.
