@stoicheincat.bsky.social has been working on their card-based TTRPG Heroes of Odds, and the art is incredible. Super excited to be able to play it once its out!

(everyone loves to talk about immersion but I couldn’t think of a better word). It’s also a pain to actually implement without a whole lot of time spent thinking things over and prepping.

I’ve only played the first 4 hours of this game, and already it’s given me a lot to think about (mostly how that pesky war seems to be the cause of a whole lot of problems). Taking these principles of things making sense and being connected into ttrpgs can really help things feel real and immersive

their owners dying in the war, obviously) for sleeping with his son. This all is interconnected and follows at least enough logic to make me say “ok that makes sense” so that the world feels complete and logical, like everything is really happening for a reason in a living environment and ecosystem.

the question “Why is any of this happening?” Why are there ghouls? Because they feed on corpses and there are a lot of those after the war. Why does this abandoned village have a ghost and why should we care about it? Because of a tragedy from 20 years ago that only one npc halfway across town

I got a 3d printer coming in the mail so I can play it… and I have yet to read the rules. This shall be my reminder to go do that!

I agree completely, the best way to go is a middle ground

Obviously both of these examples are hyper-exaggerated, and I don't really have an answer to the question I just posited. In the end, you can do what you want with a game. If you want to make a temporal anomaly disguised as a librarian in a flavorless game, then you can flavor it yourself.

The opposite end of the spectrum would be flavorless options like "Spellcaster" or "Pilot" or "Swordsperson". These are less specific in their focus, allowing more flexibility in what they can represent but offering much less in terms of inspiration and character details.

For instance, if I were to write a game with character options like "Giant Frog Who Cannot Stop Moving Ever" and "Temporal Anomaly Disguised As a Librarian", that's very interesting and gives a lot of inspiration to work with. But it's also a bit limiting.

Hi! I’m crystal, I’ve been working on several projects at once, but I mostly do indie ttrpgs! The last thing that inspired me was the short story Hell Is the Absence of God by Ted Chiang! It’s really good!
