Will Trump renamed the West Bank as "Judea and Samaria" ? Christian broadcasters hope so religionnews.com/2025/02/20/t...

Been covering the SBC since 2008. When I started, SBC leaders denied abuse was an issue n their churches and said there was nothing they could do about it. That changed--largely because abuse survivors kept telling their stories until they could not be ignored.

"Coming soon, Ministry Check will provide leaders with the ability to search for information about individuals who have been convicted, found liable, or confessed to abuse." The message on the website for the SBC abuser database-- which now seems dead. religionnews.com/2025/02/18/a...

Three years ago, Southern Baptists told their leaders to build a database to track abusive pastors. Now that database appears dead in the waters -- and leaders say it's no longer a focus religionnews.com/2025/02/18/a...

The happy group.

Lee Greenwood, Kennedy Center board member, talking to @bmietana.bsky.social last month: “I still think we’re a Christian nation. We have to remember our roots. We came here not to escape religion. We came to bring faith with us.” religionnews.com/2025/01/17/l...

@bmietana.bsky.social teases out tensions of faith groups accepting gov't aid to provide charitable service, the main question being what right then does the gov't have to oversee the faith group? Such partnerships have always existed but George W. Bush and then Trump expanded them 🧵

No one complained last week when Baptists got millions for disaster relief from the government. Or for getting PPP loans. But helping refugees is seen as a sin religionnews.com/2025/02/12/i...

A little crowd sourcing -- hoping to talk to religious groups have been affected by the rise of legal sports betting

Heard this morning about a former co-worker that died. That and the airplane crash this week has me thinking about how short life is and how little time there is for nonsense.

Met Chris Surratt while living in Nashville and talked with him a number of times for story. Was sharp, kind and gracious-- sad to hear of his passing churchleaders.com/news/504797-...

When Bishop Mariann Budde implored President Donald Trump last week to show mercy toward groups worried that his policies will upend their lives, reactions on both sides were intense. @bmietana.bsky.social looks at those who say her version of empathy is wrong-headed ... even sinful.

Back in the 1990s, politicians and church leaders pushed for faith groups have access to federal funds. Now some evangelicals see that as a woke conspiracy religionnews.com/2025/01/30/w...

The NBA and other sports leagues take money from gambling companies. Their broadcast partners promote betting. This is the natural next step. www.wsj.com/sports/baske...

The conservative pivot against Catholic Charities is wild to see given that, in 2014, Glenn Beck, Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep. Randy Weber and then-Rep. Louie Gohmert all visited a CC center helping immigrant children at the border and *celebrated it!* Beck donated toys! religionnews.com/2023/07/24/r...

Talked with a former refugee from Iraq who is now a pastor in Dallas. He says the refugee resettlement program saved his life-- and represents the best of American and Christian ideals "There is a real need, and America needs to bless those people..." he said. religionnews.com/2025/01/27/f...

The Trump administration has cut the funds that help new refugees pay rent and settle in the US. Faith groups that help refugees -- and the churches that work with them —say they are not giving up religionnews.com/2025/01/27/f...

Americans will bet a billion on the Super Bowl this year--as legal gambling has become a key part of sports. Most faith leaders are powerless to say anything about it religionnews.com/2024/02/05/w...

This is the church I went to when I lived in Asheville, and my first experience with a mainline congregation. We decided to go there because of the community garden in their front yard ❤️
