Her point was that the reforms, which everyone agreed were needed, had no resources behind them. Instead, a volunteer tasks force was set up - which was well intentioned and worked hard - but was overwhelmed by tasks like setting up an abuser database.

Also, a survivor explained the SBC's response to abuse this way: it's as if the house was on fire and the SBC, instead of calling a the fire department, set a committee and handed out buckets. They stood around and tossed buckets on the fire while things burned

Now everyone knows abuse is a problem - from the people in the pew to the highest leadership. Churches seem more likely to call police when abuse happens, more likely to run background checks, and act when abuse happens. Not all the time but it can't be ignored. That's because of survivors.

No worries - it is one of the interesting twists of this story. So is the use of the song in citizenship ceremonies-- I think he wants it to be seen as both an "American the Beautiful" big tent anthem -- and a MAGA hit.
