Signs of Spring #fsprintmonday

Mothfest!! First moth to actinic light here this year, a Double-striped Pug. #UKmoths

55spp on my BTO Birdtrack in a 105min visit to Lepe CP this morning including 2 Gt N Diver, 2 Slav Grebe, Barn Owl and this colour-ringed Med Gull from Poland, which has been here before. #UKbirding #Hantsbirds

#Hantsbirding I have just seen Blashford Lakes HIWWT Reserve will be closed Sunday 26th & Monday 27th (posted on the other place). Gull count will need rescheduling again.

A colour-ringed, even if all black, 2cy Oystercatcher near the car park at Lepe CP this morning. Seems likely to have been ringed just a mile away as a nestling last summer. #Hantsbirds #BTOringing #waders

A few inverts today, two very different Mottled Umber, Orchesella villosa & Winter Moth, The moths from an outside light at Lepe CP and the springtail from my front step. #UKmoths #Invertebrates

Patch visit to Lepe this morning produced no additions for the year but the Spoonbill count had risen to four. #Hantsbirds #UKbirds

A typically quiet walk in the New Forest, just 15spp for #BTObirdtrack in over an hour, but these did include rt Hen Harrier & male Merlin. #Hantsbirds #UKbirding

Early patch visit to LepeCP, 51spp for #Birdtrack but the first visit not to add to the 2025 patchlist. 2 Gt N Diver close off-shore & 2 Raven harassing a Peregrine the best. #Hantsbirds #UKbirding

Lepe patch visit added 3spp for 2025 this morning, Green Sandpiper the best as can be tricky here. 84 for the year so all time Jan best of 91 in sight. #Hantbirds #UKbirding

Southern Pfandlscharten Glacier 1911 | 2024 Jürgen Merz This small west-flowing glacier located in the Hohe Tauern range (AT) has now completely disappeared ✝️ During the LIA (~1850), all the cirque was filled with 1.2 km² of ice down to an elevation of 2350 m! ❄️ 📷 @glacionaut/IG

A great morning to be out, a proper winter's day. Collared Dove & Sparrowhawk added to the Lepe patchlist and good to see at least 2 Brambling remain with the Chaffinch flock, especially as there are so few about. #Hantsbirds #UKbirding

Lepe patch yearlist stumbles on with Brambling, Sandwich Tern & Greylag added this morning before the sleet arrived. #UKbirding #Hantsbirds

Better weather today and a couple of nice additions to the patchlist at LepeCP with a Spoonbill on Stansore Pool and a fly-by Black-throated Diver, taking the site year list to 70spp. #HantsBirds #UKbirding

Managed an hour on the LepeCP patch this morning, weather grim and birds few. Did manage to add a couple to the yearlist though, Treecreeper & Bullfinch. Retired home to dry out and hope for better tomorrow. #ukbirding #hantsbirds

Another NYE, another night of terror for millions of birds across the Netherlands (and around the world). Last year we published in @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social Frontiers 🧪 about the massive impact of fireworks on birds 🦅. Paper: doi.org/10.1002/fee.... Thread below 🧵👇

Turned out there were more moths for 2024, at an outside light at Lepe CP: 2 Double-striped Pug, Winter Moth, Mottled Umber, Acleris hastiana & Udea ferrugalis . #teammoth

No trap out tonight, but a Double-striped Pug to the kitchen window, the last moth of the year? #teammoth

A have a couple of regular birding sites, one of these is a tiny patch of saltmarsh overlooking Southampton Water, a short visit at dusk today added 2 species for the year, Pintail & Snipe to make 99, I doubt I will find the extra one by year's end. #UKbirding #Hantsbirding

Winter tree #photography #winter

Just the one moth in ghe trap last night, Pale Brindled Beauty & Hygomia cinctella, a non-native snail that is now becoming very common in S.Hants. #teammoth

3/2 in 2 traps at home, December Moth & Spruce Carpet. Contrasts with the 14/3 I saw at an outside light around dusk yesterday evening ay Lepe CP, just show the difference between suburbia and actual countryside. #mothsmatter #teammoth

Christmas Day, pork pie for breakfast (as is right and proper) and in the garden Primrose, Ragwort and Field Scabious in flower as is not proper at all.

Anyone know why the # teammoth autocorrects to # teammate? It seems impossible to use the first.

61spp in 107mins for #BirdTrack at LepeCP this morning, 2 male Marsh Harrier, Goshawk, Great Northern Diver, Common Scoter, 80 Snipe & 2 colour-ringed Ringed Plover, but missed the White-tailed Eagle. #HantsBirds #ukbirding
