🚨This should be amplified!! Study sections and council meetings are still being cancelled despite the court order unblocking NIH freezes, effectively halting any new research grant from being funded: www.thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...

NIH research saves lives and powers the economy. In California, it supports ~56K jobs and $13.55B in economic activity. Cuts to NIH funding puts lives and livelihoods in jeopardy. Congress must act—tell your lawmakers to save medical research funding now! ucdav.is/4i4zFfB #SaveNIHresearch

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles infection. But infants under 12 months old are not eligible for the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable. When measles spreads due to low vaccination rates, it puts our youngest—and most defenseless—children at the greatest risk.

New: Last night, hundreds of CDC post-doc fellows were fired, including all in the group who call themselves the "disease detectors," and are the future of public health lab leaders. One senior official told me, "It is going to cripple public health for decades." www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

On this day in 1961, the skating community mourned the tragic loss of the entire U.S. Figure Skating team, when Sabena Flight 548 crashed in Belgium enroute to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships. We will always remember. 🕯️

Trump-Musk are firing roughly 5,200 federal employees who work on health care this afternoon: www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/f...

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

Make no mistake. This is an all-out attack on health in America. Not only is the EIS vital to controlling infectious disease; it was where a remarkably high fraction of our public health leaders received formative training and experience. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

There’s a real chance that we staring down a new pandemic in the form of bird flu. It could never happen or happen in the coming months. And we are in the process of decimating our core national public health and infectious disease service.

In its totality what's happening at HHS & NIH is a Musk/Trump effort to shutdown almost all cancer cure research in the US. No more new cures. Cancer's brand is really in the dumps. It polls terribly. This is a political argument that is straightforward to make. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/nih-a...

Not really a lot of putting the different pieces of the puzzle together. But across all of HHS, centered especially at nih and nci you’ve got a ton of different actions all of which seem to have the common goal of making certain there’s never a new cancer drug or cure again ever.

This is all a good reminder that, “no help, no votes until the criminal conduct stops” is neither a big ask nor a politically perilous one.

NIH and Its Agencies Are Being Smothered talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/nih-a...

Our values define who we are, how we act, what decisions we make as a people. Perhaps it’s time to remember what values define us. So glad @thebulwark.bsky.social published the article I wrote on this subject today, on a day we give thanks. Enjoy & provide your thoughts.
