The Trump regime is now using US Attorneys to intimidate academic journals by sending them letters demanding they explain how they ensure ‘viewpoint diversity.’ Journal editors should be public about this and coordinate to refuse to comply with these fascist tactics.

🧵 Thread on NSF grant terminations 🧪 This Nature article today confirms what DOGE's arrival at NSF can mean: terminating already awarded grants. "DOGE is...considering more than 200 of them for termination, NSF staff members have told Nature" What can we expect? And what should NSF grantees do?

How grant funding and oversight works: 1) institutions fund the research, then are reimbursed (in the rears). 2) Budgets are agreed to before grant disbursement 2) institutions are independently audited annually 3) Financial reports occur regularly 4) IDC are negotiated w the govt regularly 1/2

Indeed. Some of us joined the Fed government precisely to support the scientific calling of others.

I was thinking about this Joe and Tracy anecdote from the supply chain crisis on gummy bears. Things are probably going to get really weird in a few weeks in unexpected ways:

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

This is a really illuminating discussion among some university educators responsible for teaching undergrads.

As of this morning, we've tracked over 600 student visa revocations at more than 100 colleges. That's double yesterday morning's count. Send updates to me or @amowreader.com and follow @insidehighered.com interactive visa map here: www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

If you're still not convinced that the goal is to both get rich and make Americans dumb and compliant by forcing universities to close, may I interest you in the freezification of ALL Columbia University grants? www.science.org/content/arti...

Where is our humanity?

A blockbuster study from Irene Papanicolas and colleagues linking wealth to mortality. - At every US wealth level., mortality rates were higher than Europe's - The wealthiest Americans have a survival rate similar to the poorest northern/western Europeans www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

🚨 BIG week for lawsuits against the NIH. Now 16 states have sued NIH and HHS for "engag[ing] in a concerted, and multi-pronged effort to disrupt NIH’s grants." "The result of these disruptions has been, in a word, devastating," they write. ag.ny.gov/press-releas...

They are resegregating academic science

Carney: The system of global trade anchored on the United States.. is over. Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80 year period when the United States embraced the mantle of economic leadership… is over.

For the outstanding diversity F31 awardees I’ve had the pleasure of working with, you are deserving of those awards. You are doing amazing work and I know you will continue to do so. I took my position to help trainees navigate funding & their careers and will continue to do so.

The indirect cost issue has moved to the background for the moment, but it will be back. Here is a short thread about indirect costs. I have posted a Powerpoint deck with these slides in the Miscellaneous Materials folder on jeremymberg.github.io/jeremyberg.g... 1/n

Trump is imposing a 10% tariff on the Heard and McDonald Islands. The Heard and McDonald Islands are uninhabited.

My deepest thanks and respect to all the faculty that have dedicated their efforts to building inclusive training programs for undergrads, grad students, and postdocs. You have made such an impact on our training environments. 💔

On days like this I remember there was time people when people applauded frontline responders of the pandemic every night. Public health workers, doctors, nurses etc.. How quickly we went from that to "public health bad, science bad, researchers bad and must be erased" is true mind blowing.

It's going to be a brutal day at the NIH. Never forget what the Republicans have done to science. I never want to hear that there is "bipartisan support for research" ever again. Congress could step in at any moment.

To state the obvious, I think what we are seeing today is the actual dismantling of the NIH. At the very least, this will render certain ICs completely non-functional, which obviously is the point. Buy, hey, study sections and council meetings are back on 🙄

Replace every university president with a bus driver.
