Elon is a fascist who has morally betrayed Canada but the petition to revoke his citizenship is wrong for the same reason that Harper's bill to do the same to terror suspects was wrong. Alienation as punishment is barbaric, illiberal and creates two-class citizenship. Ironically SCOTUS said it best:

what a banger I hope they play it at the concert

The personal opinions of planners and staffers are one of the most significant and under-appreciated aspects influencing if your city builds or not.

Foolishly thought that October was a one-off and that Bezos wasn't going to dismantle the editorial independence of the @washingtonpost.com, but finally cancelled my eight year old subscription today

Really disappointing that after what was a wildly successful and popular Water St pedestrian pilot last summer, council has decided that this year all we get is 8 hours a week.

Vancouver's Gastown pedestrian pilot was a big hit in 2024. Will it be coming back, or will opponents finally succeed in killing the car-free street? Council decides its fate this Tuesday. bettercolumbia.ca/20...

I wrote a piece about the city's baffling decision to scrap a protected bike lane in Dunbar, despite its minimal parking and traffic impacts. bettercolumbia.ca/2025/02/20/k...

Vancouver tried to add a bike lane on King Ed in Dunbar: šŸ‘‰Preserves street parking šŸ‘‰Replaces no car lanes šŸ‘‰Protected design Mayor Ken Sim's weak leadership resulted in staff caving to misinformation from local opponents. Now we're getting another painted bike lane next to arterial traffic.

Disappointed but not surprised to hear that Vancouver is giving up on a virtually zero parking loss, zero roadspace reallocation, zero-cost protected bike lane on King Ed because some NIMBYs didn't like it for made-up reasons. Turns out there is such a thing as a free lunch, and we don't want it.

Questioning my allegiance to Buy Canadian after buying No Name cream cheese, which sucks

we're so back

My essay on becoming a reluctant nationalist is up, reprinted, in the Walrus. Here's to socking a bully in the goddamned kisser. thewalrus.ca/trumps-trade...

I genuinely can't believe that my favourite bandā€”who have not played a show since George W. Bush was presidentā€”are getting back together. Really hoping for a Vancouver or Seattle date šŸ¤ž

If you want an affordable city, where everyone is safe and where everyone belongs, Ken Sim isnā€™t working for you. We need leaders who are ready to stand up and fight back. Thatā€™s why Iā€™m running with @onecityvan.bsky.social for City Council. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGcI...

You know what I always think when I have too many screws and don't know what to do with them? I know, how about dump all of them on the shoulder of Barnet Highway! In unrelated news, I have two flat tires now

I made a Vancouver bus route in the style of an old Montreal paper timetable map. Why? No idea. How long did it take? Too long. But you have to admit this is a cool style.

Ken Sim's supportive housing pause today seems like as good a time as any to point out that BC Housing is completely immune by law from municipal zoning. BC Housing needs to spend less time applying for permits it doesn't need and more time building the housing that we do need.

My crackpot conspiracy theory is that Loblaws deliberately made the data signal bad in my No Frills so I can't load the points card

Hopefully the TikTok ban blowing up in Democrats' faces will teach them not to surrender civil liberties to moral pani... oh who am I kidding

Infrastructure costs have become a go-to excuse for restrictive zoning policy in BC. But this gets things backwards. Infrastructure for denser housing is cheaper per capita. Apartment bans are hurting, not helping. New analysis by me & @dannyoleksiuk.bsky.social www.policynote.ca/housing-infr...

No way, China made a clone of the ugliest bus in existence, the Gillig replica trolley

There's no worse example of American imperialism than Boxing Day being replaced with "Black Friday"

This might be the most informative wayfinding display I've ever seen -- other cities should take note!

Some friends and I started an urbanist blog recently. Wrote my first piece about the weird history of how SFU ended up on Burnaby Mountain, check it out!

me normally: rail to the airport often has a bad ROI because airports aren't a great anchor and tend to be surrounded by bad land use me riding the Canada Line to YVR: hell yeah this rules why don't we have 5000 of these
