NEW: President Zelenskyy is asked if he'd “give up” being Ukrainian president in exchange for peace. “Yes, I am happy, if it is for the peace of Ukraine. If you need me to leave this chair, I am ready to do that, and I also can exchange it for Nato membership for Ukraine."

To celebrate the new thread feature & because it's a good time to remember that doing small things is better than doing nothing, here's my only thread from Old Twitter that went viral. Seven years ago, when I moved in, I inherited what I thought was an overgrown tip at the bottom of my garden...

Ope.

“Having rejected woke, voters will be increasingly protective of other liberal gains. Misreading this, and high on themselves, conservatives will end up weirding people out in a major way.”. on.ft.com/41ezlnG

The Starmer aide/AI stuff feels a bit canary/coalmine because this isn't letting electoral factors triumph over good governance or sinply doing something I don't like - things every government does - this is falling for a scam. There are people in Nunber 10 who are just idiots.

Happening now: Israeli tanks have entered the northern West Bank after 40,000 Palestinians were expelled from three refugee camps in the Jenin & Tulkarm areas. There's a real and present danger that these camps will be erased. This genocide must be stopped. By us all. Now!

Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro has joined calls for the UK government to “reconsider and change course” when it comes to AI, warning that “no one believes the proposed ‘opt-out’ system will work”. 👇 #BookSky

A typically anti-UK diatribe from the EU-ultra equivalent of the Brexit ultras, both of them being agreed that they would like geography not to exist. @chrisgrey.bsky.social article is worth reading on the reset.

Hi All, just sent out my weekend update (free as always). The only way to understand the USA and its interactions with Russia, Ukraine and Europe is to accept that the US is now a mafia state. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Federal employees "bombarded an online chat with spoon emojis to express their displeasure at the deferred resignation offer known as the 'fork in the road.' (Their bosses responded by removing spoons from the list of searchable emojis permitted in their videoconferencing platform.)" 🥄

Thinking about ordinary public servants in the US now, wondering how to do the right thing without losing their jobs

Le Monde, "French MPs vote through the left's wealth tax on the ultra-rich" Your reminder that a 2% wealth tax on those with £10 million, affecting 0.04% of the UK population, would raise £24 billion a year You have to wonder why Labour chose not to do this..

I’d like to think I’m the first person to get into a flame war with VPOTUS from the swimming pool of Woburn Center Parcs at half-term.

“If you are not at the table, you are on the menu”.

Which book sold 27,000 copies in 30 mins? Which was "a pure pig to write"? Who started planning how to spend the money - then didn't win? Who deemed his own books "pompously moralistic"? What judge called the prize "crooked nonsense"? My look back at @thebookerprizes.bsky.social in the 1990s:

🚨🚨 Grim, heavy but nonetheless essential read by esteemed observer Chris Grey on the relationship between #brexit and Trump's new very dangerous global chaos politics and the stark choices ahead for Britain navigating all of this. 👇

Just been standing outside a bar in Rome next to some young priests having a drink and a smoke and a gossip. Big Westminster pub in the run up to an election vibe. Like The Thick of It x Conclave

A former Soviet intelligence officer alleges Trump was recruited by the KGB in 1987 and given the codename “Krasnov.” Alnur Mussayev served in the 6th Directorate, responsible for counter-intelligence support in the economy. One key objective was “recruiting businessmen from capitalist countries.”

Hard to describe what it's like being in Kyiv, surrounded by brilliant, unshakeable, brave Ukranians, and reading Trump's comments. The free world deserves a better leader, the hill deserves a better city upon it, and these people deserve better friends.

the fact that this is just a straightforward retelling of yesterday's events without hyperbole

Not sure that this is the vote winner they think it is.

Say what you want about FN/RN, but these guys aren't idiots, and they know that all that shit is now at the point of being counterproductive for their long term goals

Lizz Truss announces plans to create mega ‘free speech’ media network for Europe and the U.S: “It will take on the BBC, Starmer and socialists, and the censors of Germany!” She’s speaking to about 30 people, utterly unhinged drivel.

All I can say at this stage is… FINALLY! 💥

Anyways, so this is whose podcast Maurice Glasman is happy to appear on. And yet people think he should have some voice in Labour politics?

One more reason for Starmer to ensure Hermer remains in Govt. His knowledge & intellect is needed to help maximise what’s left of UK’s influence in shaping what looks set to be the biggest international shake up since 1945.

I’m starting a research project on the contribution that recognising environmental personhood in law might make to minimising pandemics resulting from zoonotic disease spillover. Would be great to connect with #environmental #lawyers #activists and #scholars - say 👋! #law #environment #nature

Immigrant children, as young as months old, at risk of trafficking, lose legal representation. "This means that children are expected to show up in court, as of tomorrow, on their own, with no legal counsel, and try to defend themselves from deportation”

“I would love to kindle in modern audiences just ten per cent of that readiness to go into a concert hall and be surprised and delighted in the unexpected”

Quite right of course. No lawyer does their client any good if they give “favourable” but inaccurate advice which exposes the client to legal problems later

I have three reviews to go for the Obs but today, after 180 of them, is my last column for OFM. So I thought I’d summarise my searing advice from the last 15 years: the wisdom, the provocations and the occasional stupidities. Enjoy. Or grind your teeth. A truly superb speech from Lord Hague at his admission as Chancellor of Oxford University today. Here's the link: www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02...

This is an excellent speech by the new Chancellor of Oxford University, William Hague. Lots of good jokes, but also a staunch defence of what a university should be. We're going to need a lot of that in the years ahead.

One of my experiences as a government official was that when the UK and France agreed on something, joint progress could be made pretty quickly. Reading between the lines, this is happening with regard to Ukraine and Trump. A small ray of hope in an otherwise bleak day.

*extremely ‘I write editorial comment for the FT’ voice*. Completely agree with this and also feel like it’s in part a manifestation of how UK has turned inwards. Even much of the political class seems unaware of how important and significant all this is for UK prosperity and security.

There are many revealing gems in Simon Hart's memoirs of being a Tory Chief Whip, but this one is my favourite: - Andrew "utter knob" Bridgen gets the boot. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...
