Thoroughly enjoying the forthcoming Elphie, by Gregory Maguire. Glorious characters, beautiful writing.

I had forgotten how damned good this is.

A must-read.

I've been hand-selling @nnedi.bsky.social's miraculous Death of the Author by telling customers that it's the best novel I've read in maybe six years, with the best ending I've seen in close to ten years. And I'm not exaggerating.

The horror!

Inconceivable.

To Live and Die in L.A. is a Christmas movie.

If he thinks this will make her shut up, he doesn't know AOC.

This is it in a nutshell: "I thought...I didn't know...". His statements were so outrageous that many people assumed he was exaggerating, that he couldn't possibly intend to follow through. They weren't really listening.

I'm reading that new history of the Yo-Yo. It has its ups and downs.

I don't think it's short-sighted. They know exactly what they are doing, and they want what will happen as a result.

ELO, Roll Over Beethoven.

Reviewing the forthcoming King of Ashes, by S.A. Cosby(@blacktopkid.bsky.social), for @ala-booklist.bsky.social. I said nice things about 2023's All the Sinners Bleed in Booklist, too.

Delighted to be reviewing the forthcoming El Dorado Drive, by @meganabbott.bsky.social, for @ala-booklist.bsky.social.

I had to pause The Hudsucker Proxy and I got Paul Newman looking like this.

That was fun.

What is it with people in coffee shops and restaurants watching videos on their phones with the volume on and no earphones? Do they think no one else can hear?

I've been reading this interesting book by @jowrotethis.bsky.social, Dave Gonzales, and @mrgavinedwards.bsky.social. It's a business book, like Barbarians at the Gate or The Other Guy Blinked, and not a rah-rah promo for Marvel. Very well done.

If these are the things the American president is doing in broad daylight, what horrible things is he doing in the shadows, where no one can see?

@hutchinsondave.bsky.social caught me in a weak moment. I've been laughing for five minutes.

Read this terrific book. Do it now.

I feel like I've missed something. Why did Mr. Leone find it necessary to issue that statement?

American friends, can you answer a question for this Canadian? Does the Democratic Party still exist? I ask because I'm not seeing much of anything from them lately and I'd expect them to be pretty vocal these days.

Thrilled to be reviewing the forthcoming Fever Beach, by @carlhiaasen.bsky.social, for @ala-booklist.bsky.social.

Finally got around to watching London Has Fallen. Weird that the one thing they got right, the team-up of hero and president, is something they didn't do in Olympus Has Fallen, but Roland Emmerich did do in Olympus's competitor, White House Down. I guess they decided to lift from the better flick.

If you enjoy @nnedi.bsky.social's Death of the Author, and you're looking for something else with the same mind-bending quality (you know what I'm obliquely referring to), may I suggest The Ferryman, by Justin Cronin? It is a spectacular and deeply affecting novel.

Well, I've finished it. I'm still trying to process the brilliant, mind-shattering conclusion. This is @nnedi.bsky.social's masterpiece.

Parental warning: this post contains violins and Mature subject matter.

Now, I know Gerard Butler isn't known for his dramatic range or the subtleties of his performances, but he is remarkably effective here, in a role that demands nuance.

Death of the Author, by @nnedi.bsky.social, is an exhilarating, heartbreaking, charming, beautiful, wildly imaginative novel.
