We had a heartfelt team going away call for 18F last week. I think it finally hit and I’m so angry and sad. So many committed folks doing amazing work and I’ll miss them all. The culture @alt18f.bsky.social built is a testament to everyone who passed through over the years.

Here's what we lose when teams like USDS and 18F are suddenly deleted. New from me: www.wired.com/story/doge-m...

Need something to lighten your mood? This Kyle Kinane special has been on every other night and gets gut laughs every viewing. This special is the reason my spouse or I will randomly shout, “have you thought about a French drain… French drain… French drain...”

Our story is making its way around the world. Thank you, Der Standard! www.derstandard.at/story/300000...

My aunt passed away last night. So with that, my government department was shuttered and losing two cats I hope the rule of three/law of country music is satisfied. Also, now when I get a text that starts, "I'm sorry to hear about your bad news..."

Don't let the outrage steal your joy. Take the time to reclaim your attention and focus on something you love. Or not; I'm not a cop.

In other news, I'm wicked excited for Rise of the Golden Idol's DLC to drop tomorrow. (If you haven't played it yet, now's a great time to start!) The original is also outstanding, and you can play a trial in-browser here: www.thegoldenidol.com/trial?

I ain't reading all that. I'm happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened.

Goodnight, moon Goodnight, zoom Goodnight, Google docs Goodbye, goons Goodnight, repos Goodnight, “tomorrow’s!” Goodnight, slack Goodbye, musk rose Goodnight, PIV card Goodnight, time cards Goodnight, friends Goodnight… next one’s on me

Last week I said goodbye to two cats. This week I lost my job. I hope to god the laws of country music say it’s only my car next.

18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want – yet we were eliminated shortly after midnight. Read our letter to the American people: 18f.org

Truth. 18F had been adding publicly known and unknown all-star talent to an already stacked roster. 18F had people willing to take pay cuts to come to government. People committed to do the work in ways the gooners will never be.

When it doubt, smooch cats. Sadly, the Professor isn’t as big a believer in the process.

My time at 18F was too short. I was hoping to spend my full eight years there, not three. But that brief time was an honor and a privilege. My coworkers were smart, kind, and thoughtful. My work helped people. That’s all I can ever ask for. Time to grieve. Then figure out what’s next.

I made this last week. Figured I’d need it for myself eventually but not all of 18F!

What really frosts my cupcake is how there are folks with more government (and military) service at 18F than some of the gooners have been alive. Those people deserve better.

It’s so hypocritical to say you’re “all in” on AI and then fire teams like 18F doing AI work. My team was helping build metadata standards to train Large Language Models with vetted, fair, and ethical content. (Pretty much the opposite of what the DOGE gooners want.)

Pairs nicely with this story that a DOGE gooner was uploading “mass fire” code to his public GitHub repo. 🙄🥄

I always knew I’d say was a honor to be a part of 18F. I just thought it would be as an alum, not as someone who outlived it.

Hey, when the dice are right they’re right. (Also, great use of the word “lament.”)

Up early to greet the cold winter morning with songs of heat and comfort. The Professor keeps an eye out for his pals and checks where they used to sleep before settling on his couch. We sit in the shadow of Mount Tom but our hearts are on the Train to Birmingham.

So unfair that West Coast federal employees get first crack at these after hours news dump emails while us East Coast feds are living it up with our ibuprofen and mid-range whiskey and sodas.

Working on my 5 bullets, brb.

Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.

The part of Friday that still has me spinning is when, after taking Basher to the ER, I told a friend, "Well, at least that should be today's bad news; I'm glad we got it out of the way early." This is a reminder to all to be careful when you ask aloud, "I mean, what ELSE could happen!?!?"

Taking the day to grieve the loss of the cats and doing something we've never done before - resetting the house. We're ditching generations of old cat toys, cleaning mats, moving furniture, clearing the slate for the Professor, and eventually, new additions.

In a turn of events that can only be described as a gut punch to the soul we said goodbye to Basher and Patches today. We adopted them knowing of their existing conditions so we’re happy for the time we had together. Still, a day of tears and saying it was ok for them to leave if they were ready.

You think your day is gonna be bad and then you’re at the emergency vet being asked if you’ll authorize treatment if your cat goes into cardiac arrest while in the ER. So. Yeah. Gonna be a heck of a Friday.

Who wore it better?

Going into Friday like…
