i think you need to seek them out and approach them.
i wouldn't say it's lucrative as alot of the design work , as i have been told by some, is being given to them (the manufacturers) freely. would hope they at least get a freebie of the product they designed for their troubles, at least.

I've not been professionally arting for the longest time, but i have absolutely noticed that the pallet swatch most refs come with, while greatly appreciated, hold about 90% of a characters scheme at most, and are small , pixel-mixed blots at worst.
