NIAID's Integrated Research Facility is one of the few federal facilities charged with studying Ebola. Tuesday afternoon, all of its work was put on indefinite pause by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s department. www.wired.com/story/hhs-ni...

Don't even want to post this, but here goes. The following grant opportunities are about to pulled. Given that NIH is moving to restrict new NOFOs to only 5 (5!!!) per institute, the chance these are reinstated is basically 0. One might ask why? Destroying NIH; crushing academic science

When folks can afford fewer things at higher prices, economists describe this as a decline in real income, and a widespread fall in real income is called a recession.

"If you look at a long period of time, a lot of our increase in living standards seems to be coming from public investment in scientific research." The devastating cuts to science funding aren't just academic, they threaten our livelihoods and wellbeing. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/30/b...

📣 NIH reinstating some terminated grants Exclusive via @chronicle.com 🔗👇 confirms what we’ve seen for weeks Piece asks: what’s “secret sauce”? As an early-impacted PI, I know strategy matters Now I'm advising orgs on appeals, “orderly” closeout & reinstatements: brittanycharlton.com/consulting

BTW. If you’re a scientist and are feeling hollowed out, depressed, fried, frustrated, confused, and simply exhausted by everything, I understand you. You are perfectly sane and you are not alone.

⚠️💉Concerning news from FDA. Delays on Novavax’s COVID booster—despite past approvals of similar vaccines—limit choices for those who can't tolerate mRNA (e.g., some with long COVID). If FDA demands new trials from Pfizer/Moderna, fall boosters could be off the table. www.statnews.com/2025/04/27/f...

Some good news - the CDC released an HIV Surveillance Supplemental Report with data for 2023. Unfortunately, there is no data presented on HIV incidence and PrEP coverage because...of RIF. This diminishes our situational awareness re: where we are nationally in our work to end the HIV epidemic.

Every day, a new reason to despise this asshole. Every. Day.

If you're looking for a concrete way to support research terminated by the administration, consider a gift to the BEEM study, critical research on the impact of Guaranteed Income (GI), for anxiety and depression, financial stability and healthier behaviors. givingtogether.ucsf.edu/fundraiser/6...

Even if they don't know the name, millions of Americans owe their health to HRSA, the federal agency that funds community centers, maternal & infant health programs, HIV care and more. Their health will suffer if a Trump administration plan to eliminate the agency comes to fruition. bit.ly/HRSAharm

My dear health equity peers, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is doubling down on their DEI efforts. 💪🏽 Here’s a grant opportunity tinyurl.com/3pnxhy2d with a rapid response option those whose “health equity research projects have lost federal funding.” ⭐️ Please share ⭐️

NEW: Per multiple sources, the National Cancer Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors has been entirely disbanded.

Here’s last night’s story about the impact RFK Jr. is having on public health, and why the rate of diabetes in China is *not* fifty percent. Can you hear us, Robert? Robert, listen to us: you have to stop acting like half of China has diabetes. It’s wrong, and also very weird! youtu.be/8H34jcpEsFs

This week’s main story is about the budget and staffing cuts being made to public health agencies in the U.S. under RFK Jr.’s leadership, how those cuts will impact all of us, and some foolproof ideas for what scientists can do in the absence of totally superfluous stuff like, y’know, centrifuges.

Please, if you love anything about this life, stop using ChatGPT and other GenAI. Just stop. Don't use it to dunk on it, don't use it for a laugh, just stop and let that shit wither.

Document posted by National Science Foundation program director on LinkedIn says not only that grants are being terminated by DOGE but that they're being deleted from databases. Presumably to make it difficult or even impossible to undo DOGE's illegal actions.

“A misinformed narrative is being used at HHS to attempt to trick the public into thinking that [budget] cuts are about improving Americans’ health. Yet, one of the intents of authoritarian governments is to destroy independent science at government institutions and to silence academia.“

New at Can We Still Govern: An anonymous NIH employee maps out the GOP budget gameplan to permanently gut our most important science agency. Impoundment, delay and red tape will create artificial "savings" that become the new benchmark for NIH budgets. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-nih-bu...

This isn't a new product. It's an updated vaccine to account for new strains and viral evolution. Are they going to do this for all COVID and influenza vaccines yearly? Because that effectively shuts them down. There isn't enough time between identification of strains included & release of vaccine.

🔥👏 Great to see the scientific community standing firm against this admin’s lunacy. The Lancet, one of the world’s top medical journals, calls for RFK Jr. to resign for supporting harmful budget cuts to NIH, CDC, and FDA, and promoting anti-science views. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

IDEA: Stop covering politics like its a fucking sporting event. The GOP spending cuts don't provide an "opening" for Democrats to attack. They are either going to harm people or not. Journalism is supposed to be about informing people.

This is the ecosystem that's being destroyed. Add the cuts to the federal agencies' budgets and workforce to the attacks on university funding and autonomy; the result is that the US ability to generate knowledge and innovation vanishes.

The US government doesn't subsidize university research. Rather, universities subsidize government research. I've seen recent threads deceiving the first half of this, but nothing recent describing the extent to which universities are doing the subsidizing.

If there’s one thing I’ve taken away from reporting on the current DOGE collection of govt data, it is that the people who’ve previously spent their careers carefully handling this information believe there is almost no limit to how it could be abused (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.

⛔ NIH ended ALL of my grants mid-project, given LGBTQ health focus 🏳️‍🌈 ⚖️ So what am I doing? Suing RFK, Jr. As one team member shared in this story👇: "The threats to our work don’t just make me fear for my career — they make me fear for my safety.“ #SaveDemocracy #SupportScience #PublicHealth

Countless local arts and humanities groups in all 50 states had their funding stripped without warning and scholars in the field had their grants axed, all so that Trump can spend $34 million of your taxpayer dollars building bad statues for his personal vanity project

In its ongoing mission to shrink the federal government, the Trump administration is now proposing a more than 40% budget cut to the National Institutes of Health - the crown jewel of American medical research. 60 Minutes, Sunday.

They are taking away our vaccines. Jay Bhattacharya is talking about eliminating mRNA vaccines. Meanwhile, RFK Jr. has managed to ratfuck the Novavax approval process.

The Trump Administration’s cuts at Health and Human Services hit every part of the scientific establishment: not only the federal government and universities but also states, counties, cities, and the private sector.

I've been WAITING for this one. Good.

RFK Jr blames diet, lifestyle & vaccines for chronic illness. Dr Oz says it’s a “patriotic duty” to lead a healthy life & be fit enough to serve in the military. Neither of them are pushing for Universal Healthcare, basic income, an end to food deserts & inequality, clean water etc. It’s eugenics

As we leave you tonight, we are energized to see pushback working. We will remain vigilant. The power of the people is stronger than the people in power.

Researchers say a lack of support, including the Trump administration’s proposed and existing cuts to health insurance, research and special education, are the real challenges for individuals and families living with autism.

Trump has slashed the NIH and NSF budget, hired an anti-vaxxer as head of Health and Human Services, and filled the government's web page with crazed conspiracy theories. Here's why we just published a volume on the left's war on science. by Lawrence Krauss and Steve Pinker.
