In his foreword to the immigration white paper Starmer says high net migration has done “incalculable damage” to the country.
That’s a complete reversal on what he was saying three years ago.

It's about whether we have a government which is honest about the trade-offs and structured about its approach to this policy area. Otherwise they fuel ignorance and engage in the kind of short-termist headline-seeking behaviour which ultimately does damage to the British national interest.

Yes, I think Doug is right here - ultimately Labour's process on most policy areas is 'order the ideas from smart to stupid, then keep going down list until you find ones that don't cost the government anything upfront, backfill a philosophy from there'.

I fear that there will not be the extra money to do that and so we will see a combination of smaller providers quitting the market and bigger ones lowering the standard of care.
I'd like to see an impact assessment of that change.
